Whats a good neck pickup to go with the sh-5?

Re: Whats a good neck pickup to go with the sh-5?

what are you looking to get out of the neck position? what music do you play? what amp/fx?

a good starting point would be a '59, or Jazz.

Re: Whats a good neck pickup to go with the sh-5?

better note definition and output from the neck

I usually play hard rock , but I also play blues and some metal (grunge and metallica type of stuff and some drop tuning but not super heavy)

I use a peavey vypr and just a distortion pedal to get a hard rock sound

The Jazz is an excellent neck pickup in a Les Paul and pairs well with a Custom. It would easily cover the styles you mention.

I was looking at the Jazz, but I wasn't sure if it had what I wanted or not

how good is the full shred in the neck?

Re: Whats a good neck pickup to go with the sh-5?

A 59 is my go to choice for the neck pickup. My lead guitar player uses a Custom and a 496R in the neck of his Gibsons. It's seems a go to choice, especially when he get's just a bit of snarl when he goes into clean passages with the neck pickup.

Re: Whats a good neck pickup to go with the sh-5?

I like Jerry Cantrell's lead tone(with a little less gain) or even Chris Shiflett's lead tone

I want the metal lead tone note clarity and definition but with less gain , if that makes sence

Re: Whats a good neck pickup to go with the sh-5?

if you're not looking for a Jazz, then Full Shred it'll have to be. Fluid, amazing precision/articulation, handles gain like a champ, is hot, but not too hot. Very versatile.

next step up in terms of output would be the distortion neck which has a ceramic magnet. (from what I gather though, that's not something you'd want).

Don’t get put off by the Jazz just cuz it's called the Jazz. The Jazz pickup does not sound like jazz... I think seymour was high when he named it.
The Jazz has been used by lots of metal players, it has good attack and definition, a clear even clean sound, and a singing lead sound.
The 59 is a great neck pickup it will give you more oomph and vintage mojo, it can be muddy on the lows, the Jazz will give more attack and clarity.

ok thanks for the info

I wish Seymour had a audio sample of the full shred in the neck

I'm just wondering which one would be a better match for the custom and my playing style :/

because the audio sample of the jazz doesn't seem to do it justice

LOL Yes it is a very Silly name for a great pickup. I simply love this pickup.

The SH-2, Jazz sounds like something you could use. It has a wonderful amount of definition (Sort of like a neck single coil's bell tone, but with a little bit of Humbucker voicing). I use a "neck", Jazz PU in the bridge position of three of my Strats. I get a nice clean crunch when overdriven.
