What's a good ukulele?

Re: What's a good ukulele?

I don't know beans about mandolin, but if I was going to trust a guitar company to make a quality mandolin, Martin would be the company I would trust!

Re: What's a good ukulele?

Just something to consider. The 'standard' uke is a soprano. It is small, and fretting notes/chords are real finese finger tips. I prefer a baritone as it has a bigger neck/body, feels more 'guitar like'. The tuning/intonation issues is more due to poorly placed frets/sloppy work associated with 'cheap' manufacturing...not tuning machines. A solid company like Martin probably does good work. I bought a Dean mini guitar to practice on while my boy practices soccer. Bad frets, I have to open tune sharp or my chords are flat...it was cheap. My dad gave me a Kamaka that was stepped on. I was'nt gonna rebuild it, so some fiberglass and Bondo made it decent, and a heavy metalflake paint hides it well. It's brighter sounding, most sopranos are, but it's kool to noodle on. Good luck.
Dean on left, Kamaka right...

Re: What's a good ukulele?

Those look cool, but I don't mind that a soprano is very small, you know..I think it's part of the charm, and the fact that it's very different from a guitar, is also one of the reasons why I'm interested in it. I consider myself as a sucky guitar player, and I think playing ukulele might be easier for me..Music only keeps you interested if you have fun playing it, and when you feel you suck at playing guitar it isn't much fun, so this would be something new and interesting for me.
