Really, I'm curious, wasn't my bag, so to speak, but I'm sure that someone loves them. Too hot for my purposes, and didn't seem to get very bluesy, but again, I would like to know what they are used for.

Re: What's a JB for?

I use it to hold the cable bill to the refrigerator. lol
A JB is not bad souding but different. I wish I would have tried mine with a 250k pot which is what they were designed to be used with. When used with a 500k pot the sound is very bright.

Re: What's a JB for?

I use mine with a 250K tone pot, and I think it sounds fantastic. It ain't in my main guitar, but its definatley a great pickup once you've found the right setup with it.

Re: What's a JB for?

Hi volume stage sound is killer with a JB. If you try this with a Custom you get trouble with your bandmates.

Re: What's a JB for?

With a 500k, I use it when I need a nice and musical high-output lead guitar tone. It's not that bad for rhythm, either.

Its shortcomings IMO are that it sounds a bit too simple and high-output. A JB as a bit darker, more complex and open and lower output could very well be my dream pickup.

Re: What's a JB for?

Well, i never liked the JB. Infact, i hated it when i tried it.

To my ears, it's like playing a middle position strat single coil. A very airy, spiky tone with almost no low mids to my ears.

It migth work well for hair metal, though ;)

Re: What's a JB for?

I absolutely LOVE the JB..

as long as it's in an alder bolt on neck strat (or similiar) with a 250K pot.:bigthumb:

Every other guitar I've had them in, or played with them in the bridge sounds like @$$ to my ears.:grumble: :thumbsdow

I will say this...they clean up brilliantly...I love the sound of them with vol rolled back on the guitar.

Re: What's a JB for?

They have great cut to get through the mix with a band. Thats all I can say good about the JB! Its not my cup of tea either.

I couldn't have said it better myself. :)

For those of you who would like a JB with a tighter bass and more even midrange representation, try this:

Use the hex polepieces out of a Screamin Demon in place of the stock fillisters. It really cleans it up in the mids and gives it a wee bit more muscle in the bottom.

The highs get more air too.

Re: What's a JB for?

Absolutly love the JB in my nitefly and think you would get similar sounds out of any non-bright guitar:
1. Tight, articulate bass
2.Nice full overdrice and edge of overdrive, and cleans up, but not fully clean
3. An incredibly good split for #2 strat quack position-

So it has 2 entirely different uses for me-
1. Classic rock- Anything from VH, ACDC to LS or Joe Walsh and especially RUSH- It just screams and I do not play with heavy overdrive. It cleans up fine until you go completely clean which is not it's forte.

2. In combo with the crusier on the middle, it's as quacky clean as any strat out there- One of the few hums that has a coil that can do this well.

I think the love hate relatioship with this pup is easy to explain-
1. If you have a bright guitar it wont work
2. If you want really really hot overdrive (ie metal) or very clean, there are better pups-

But look at the list of artists- There's a wide range of PAF loaded gtrs and amps covered by those groups-

JB...
My alltime FAVORITE bridge pickup!!
Just the right everything!!
I use 500k pot and do NOT find it too bright at all.

Awesome pickup!

While i like the JB i also think that the lack of low mids(and a little bit more bass would be good too) is the main design problem with the JB....

Re: What's a JB for?

The JB is a great pickup. Alot of 80's metal guys used it...and alot of great blues/rock players (like Seymour and Jeff Beck) have used it too.

Seymour uses it in the Tele-Gib and he uses it with 250K pots...this smooths out the treble and eliminates any harshness.

The JB sounds excellant with 500K pots too, but it's brighter and some find it to be a little penetrating.

I have a feeling that most of those who find it to be to bright or to penetrating or to have to much prescence are not using it onstage or playing in a band. But regardless, with 500K pots the JB can be a little penetrating on the ears, but, IMO, mostly only when standing close to an amp that's being played loudly.

Getting pinch harmonics with the JB is easy!

And split, it has the strongest single coil tones of any humbucker I have used.

Sounds a bit like a Telecaster when split, and even in the full humbucking mode, when the volume control of the guitar is lowered some players find the JB to have a bit of a Tele tone.

The best sounding single/single/humbucker Strat I've ever had or worked on had a JB bridge pickup and two Duncan Stack Plus pickups for the neck and middle.

That guitar rocked! Killer humfree single coil tones and killer soloing tones from the JB. That guitar had 250K pots.

The are used to achieve that Megadeth tone.

I'd rather describe it as being the pickup used by Jeff Beck on Cause We've Ended As Lovers and Freeway Jam. It's all over the Blow By Blow CD...and it sounds awesome.

It's an extremely versatile pickup...everything from Megadeth to Jeff Beck to Robben Ford.

Re: What's a JB for?

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll hang on to mine so when my tastes evolve I'll have an extra option laying around.
