What's a "normal" number of guitars to own?

Re: What's a "normal" number of guitars to own?

Joe lost most of his collection in his divorce.

Yes, but he has made up for it since. I saw some photos a couple years ago and it looked like The Boneyard had been restocked.

I would imagine he has. Joe was divorced around 86. The wife's lawyer had investigators go to Aerosmith shows to see how many guitars he needed for a gig. The rest hit the auction block.

I would have played 60 songs and switched guitars during each.

I saw John Fogerty about 10 years ago and it seemed like he was doing that. He played more guitars in that show than I have in my entire life.

Re: What's a "normal" number of guitars to own?

A lot of people ask me how many guitars I own.....I always use the same answer and it works. "Way more than I need, but not nearly as many as I want" Seems to let them know that it's really not their concern.

Tommy Shaw is like that. It gets to the point where you are asking yourself if the guitar he is playing is that different than the one he just put down. Neil Young is the polar opposite. He plays the same Les Paul all night and never tunes it. Both are freaking annoying on different levels.

Re: What's a "normal" number of guitars to own?

Well.......a Les Paul, 2 Strats, 2 semi-hollows, a junior, 3 tube amps, and I need more. I still have room also.

No "normal" number of guitars you should own.

No "normal" number of guitars you should own.

I'm beginning to wonder if the OP jimzucco's wife saw how crazed we all are and has forbid him from reading the thread any further. :dunno:

No reply or posting since his last on this thread. :eek5:

Poor Jim we warned you asking us was a bad idea. :headbang: :23:

Re: What's a "normal" number of guitars to own?

I have a question and hope I don't get flamed for it, but none the less it's a serious question. I want to know if there is a way I can get a cheap guitar? I began playing in 1980 and last year I had to sell my whole rig to pay for medical expenses for my health problems and now I'm stuck home 24/7 waiting for my disability because of a bad heart and I'd LOVE to play again. I just have no money and sitting listening to Don Felder playing the Hotel California solo every day seems to be making my separation from my guitar even worse than losing a loved one. For me my guitar wasn't just an instrument, it was an outlet for my emotions and something that I could play and close my eyes and be magically teleported somewhere else where things were happy and good, but now all that's gone and I want it back. It's like an addiction and I'm out in San Antonio, Texas and just want to play guitar again. Anyone got any reasonable ideas how I can get my hands on a cheap acoustic or 2nd hand electric that I can take that ride once again on?

Re: What's a "normal" number of guitars to own?

Right now i have 4 electric guitars that are in the constant use.. probably i have one more that is waiting to get new set of pickups. i need one more just for student lessons. so probaby 4 to 5 is a must. they re all different guitar shapes, different pickups, different woods, different quality. i play one for about 3 or 4 days constantly, then i get bored, and pick another one :)

two are in e standard tuning, one is in e flat, and another one in drop c. shapes are different: one is SG, one LP, then one Classic Strat, and then two Superstrats. i have one Explorer in my case under the couch just sitting in case for about two years now.. that one is waiting for some pickups. and an SG, is waiting for new pickups too. and SG and Superstrat i have the most of the time just for going to guitar lessons. they must be in standard tunings. and they re cheaper for carrying around. well, SG would be my gigging guitar too :)

right now i am giging ocasuonaly, at smaller venues..

about amps, it has to be more than one, that definately. more of them, better.. have one valve 5 watter, than i have two Cubes, one 20 and other 40 watt. the 20 is the most usable for exercising and doing covers at home and stuff like that. the 5 valve blackstar ht-5 is for home for playing with my 4x12 cab at louder volumes, and better sound. that one i use when i get bored, and want to crank a bit up at home. then i have marshall jcm 800 2204 and randall diavlo rd 45 valve amps. at home i drive them through 1x12 cab, with one G12T-75 speaker, or one Vintage 30. diavlo is much more usable at lower volumes. while jcm is only for larger gigs. i would like to have a Vox AC 4 and Fender Bassman for better cleans, but have no money left saved to buy them.

As for pedals, i am not that big pedal user. i have wah, that i am using ocasiunaly, then delay i use it more.. then some od bosters used quite often.. than couple of distortions, which i use it ocasionaly through clean channel of amp.

Remember where you are asking this question.
"Normals" don't reside here.

Re: What's a "normal" number of guitars to own?

I tend to think that 25 is about right (for me), but then, that doesn't include a Rickenbacker, a baritone, a 12-string, anything with more than 6 strings, anything with a Floyd Rose, a 24-fret guitar, a Gretsch, a Martin, a Gibson Les Paul, and it goes on. Perhaps best if you just make your own number up...

I've got just under 50, been collecting since 1982, and I still do not have a Les Paul, or a Flying V.
