What's An Adequate Pickup for Me??!?

I am going to be getting a Jackson DK2 soon. If you didn't know, it has a Duncan Designed pickup in the bridge. I would like to swop it out for something more.....better?. I play every kind of music, but i was thinking of getting some pickups for 80's (hair) metal or thrash like....

Megadeth
Racer X
Children of Bodom(love them)
Ozzy (with Jake E. Lee, Zakk, & Rhoads)
and some Dream Theater.

ALL in all, i want something articulate, not too trebley and ear splitting, something for sweet solos and not muddy rhythm, and something that can bring out pinch harmonics good. **STILL WANT TO KICK IN THE CLEAN CHANNEL**

The JB will give you the 80's metal tone and is versitle enough pickup to handle other styles of music. If you want to go a bit heavier try the distortion. Great metal pickup, however I find the cleans just OK if that's a concern.

Re: What's An Adequate Pickup for Me??!?

No doubt the JB would be an excellent choice, but you might also consider the Custom or Custom 5. They aren't as hard as the Duncan Distortion, but they offer decent metal output and clean up nicer.

Re: What's An Adequate Pickup for Me??!?

I think the Distortion works phenominally for that type of music. That's the same generaly type of stuff I play and it works great for me. A JB would probably work for you also, but I always found it a bit too ice picky for me. If you try a JB, be sure to switch your pots to 250k to tame the brightness a bit.

And the cleans on the Distortion aren't that bad. Just roll back on the volume a little if it overdrives the amp too much. Also, you could split it (makes the cleans sparkle).

If you want to get that hair metal the JB it is the best choice. Not so good for cleans but can hadle it. The best way to obtain good cleans with the JB it is playing it split, alone or mixed with a neck humbucker.

I have some clean recordings with the JB split if you are interested...

for those tones bro get the JB definitely :)

JB or Distortion with a push/pull pot for splitting to get your clean tones.

Megadeth=JB's
Racer X= dimarzio super distortion
Children of Bodom(love them) EMG?
Ozzy (with Jake E. Lee=JB's, Zakk=EMG81, & Rhoads duncan distortion and dimarzio super distortion)
and some Dream Theater= dimarzio steve's specail now uses custom wound dimarzio's that are similar.
so a JB,DD or a super D will do ya. for those tones you done have to consider the EMG 81 the DD and JB and super D are close enough to that type of tone in a passive with a real HOT amp.

:)

of course i'm interested! can never turn down something that can help me mate!

Re: What's An Adequate Pickup for Me??!?

The JB has definetly been used on some of the metal stuff you are interested, but my reccomendation is the Duncan Distortion, for a great clean sound get a Jazz humbucker in the neck position.

Rock On :smoker:

Re: What's An Adequate Pickup for Me??!?

i noticed that most of the replies were for Duncans (except for Super D). Should i look into any other brands. I was looking at the DiMarzio PAF Pro and Tone Zone. Would those be ok?

Re: What's An Adequate Pickup for Me??!?

no.....good God no. Super Distortion maybe. But if you want the 80s metal / Rock sound It would be Duncan Distortion (hottest) , JB (2nd hottest) , Duncan Custom(3rd) or a Screamin' Demon(4th). The two latter remind me of low gain versions of the former...I personally prefer the custom over the distortion & the Demon over the JB. The D-Custom reminds me of the "Shout at the Devil" guitar tone & if you've heard the George Lynch stuff , then you know the Demon. B.U.T!!!! It also depends on your amp/preamp. If have something that needs a kick , say a JCM800 then I'd go w/the Dist or the JB. If you have an already high gain monster then try a Duncan Custom or a Screamin' Demon. Hope that wasn't confusing : )

Re: What's An Adequate Pickup for Me??!?

I think JB is the 80's hair metal tone. I have one in my Jackson DK2 and it sounds simply great in every single way.

Re: What's An Adequate Pickup for Me??!?

Jazzy/Bluesy baby! BTW - what color are you getting your Dinky in? If you're undecided, make sure you check out "Blue and Orange Flames". Screams 80's - and so does the JB. :)

Here you have:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/4/breomusic.htm

Check number 1st,2nd and 5th.

The pickup tests (1st and 2nd) are very simple clips just to ilustrate the tone of the pickups. On number 5 I have recorded all the intruments with a drum machine: background rythm it is a 59 neck, lead rythm it is a JB split and the solo it is the middle position.

Hope you find it usefull...
