Whats better in the neck? Pearly or Jazz?

First let me say thanks for all the help you guys have been giving me. It’s hard to pick out PU’s cause you can’t try them. Its all word of mouth and reviews. But heres what I have so far for my Les Paul Custom….

I’m gonna go with the JB in the bridge. But am unsure about the neck. Figured if the JB is good enough for Adam Jones and Billy Duffy than good enough for me The music I play is kinda of heavy(I posted a song in the Tips and Clips section). I would use the neck more for solos. So looking for a hard rhythm for the bridge but want a smooth full tone for the neck. Was thinking PG’s in the neck cause of Billy Gibbons but its more of a bridge PU. So very confused and undecided what to do with the neck PU. Please help. Thanks in advance

I've got a LP Custom with Antiquities in it, but have been considering the Jazz for the neck, to brighten up chords. I've tried a Jazz in Wattage's LP Standard and liked it a lot. Check out the samples on the SD site also. That should help.

I'd have a hard time choosing...the PGn and Jazz are my two favorite neck pickups.

Re: Whats better in the neck? Pearly or Jazz?

My LP has Classic 57 PUs in it now. Is the Jazz or PG's better or comparable?
Wondering if I'm replacing the same thing...kinda like foreplay

Yeah I listened to the sound clip didn't help me much haha. I think either way i will be ok. Just wish I could try them with my rig..you know?

you have them in your guitars? Yeah its tough. But I think I am making more out of it than I should be. Just want to get the right thing

Re: Whats better in the neck? Pearly or Jazz?

I like the PG much more in a LP than a Jazz. Don't get me wrong, the Jazz is a good pickup, but a LP with a Pearly Gates in it just sounds "right" to me. :)

even though it will be in the neck?

Re: Whats better in the neck? Pearly or Jazz?

The Pearly Gates neck will have more output than the Jazz. It also will have stronger mids and a more "creamy" tone. And it will sound thicker and more powerful.

The Jazz will have more bass and highs than the Pearly, more "scooped" or "hollow" sounding. Less "oomph" but with more articulation.

They both go great with a JB. I used to swear by the JB/Jazz combo (like Seymour), but I think I like the JB/PG combo more these days.

:D

I have a PG set in my LP and I couldn't be happier. Awesome tones from the neck, bridge, and middle positions, either in humbucker mode or in split mode. :burnout:

Re: Whats better in the neck? Pearly or Jazz?

guess I have a bigger problem now. No one around me has them for the neck. Only bridge, so if I order it it will take two weeks :smack:

Re: Whats better in the neck? Pearly or Jazz?

I think Mac-P's post is right on the mark. I have used both of those pickups.

Re: Whats better in the neck? Pearly or Jazz?

thanks guys. you have made it easier and I now know what I want. I just bought the PG on ebay since no one near me sells the neck PG's

So... according to your description, do you think the Jazz can cop some decent single coil tone?

I have a 59n in my LP Standard and find it too bassy/muddy through my plexi RI (cranking the amp passed 2 creates perfect power tube distortion, but this also adds a lot of bass and so the 59n is not a good match). This is why I was going to go a Jazz neck to complement my JB, considering that the tone guide from the spec chart on this site indicates that the Jazz has more highs and fewer lows than the 59n. When I compare the Jazz to the PG's tone chart though, it looks like they have the same lows but that the PG has more mids and fewer highs, so I could understand that the PG would be thicker than the Jazz, but shouldn't they have a similar bass response? Anyway, I still think the Jazz is better for me (more highs, don't need the extra thickness), but was wondering if anyone had thoughts on this.

Re: Whats better in the neck? Pearly or Jazz?

The bass response on the Jazz and the PG isn't that similar once you hear them. They both have snap on the low notes, but the PG is a bit rounder. This is especially true of the high notes. Also, the PGn seems to push a lot harder than the Jazz when driven, but it still has a lot of clarity, due to the high mids that the PG has. I like both pickups, but I like the PG a lot more.

BTW, I had the same problem with the 59 i my LP. Switched to a PG, and it's been great. ALso, try the 59 with an Alnico II mag. Not exactly a PG, but very tasty, nonetheless.

Both the Jazz n & '59 n have a certain "single coil-ish" quality to them. Sort of hollow and snappy. Of the two, the Jazz is a bit thinner sounding and not as powerful, so yea, sort of "single" style. The '59 has more bass. The Jazz has less balls and more top end.

The PG is a thicker sounding more powerful pickup than the Jazz. Most of the push comes from the mids (no doubt due to the alnico 2 mag), but also because the pup is wound hotter.

The Jazz (alnico V) has more bass than the PG, but is scooped in the mids, like the '59 (alnico V). So the Pearly has a thicker sound even though there is less bass.

I second that. I like the PG a lot more as well.
