What's got more low mids than a C-5?

I have the Custom 5 in the bridge of my Signature Odyssey, which is Alder body with maple top, oak neck and ebony fretboard. It sounds good in combination with the Air Norton in the neck, I just need a little more low mid punch from it. High mids are perfect. What pup would work well? I tried the Custom, but that one has WAY too much mids in that guitar. Too much of everything, really. I'm thinking Air Zone, maybe, but as I recall in my LP that one didn't really have the high mids.

wow dude by looking at the tone chart this would be the last pickup i would put in and alder guitar, it has no lower mids or bass and for alder thats not good! I think people normally recommend the custom custom for alder.

Thanks, dude. I tried the CC once in a LP and didn't like it though. Not enough highs/high mids. You think that would be different in this guitar? Plus, I like a tight bass. The CC didn't seem to have that.

CC is exactly the wrong way to go if the C-5 is too weak. The Duncan Custom on the other hand should be right up your alley if you´re looking for more thump and low end oomph. ;)

A Screaming Demon have plenty of low mids and more mids in general than a Custom5 , more everything really !

Re: What's got more low mids than a C-5?

I went back and forth between the C-5 and JB in an alder strat. I like the C-5 in mahogany guitars, but I think the alder just preferred the sound of the JB.

well if you look at the tone chart of the custom 5 you can see its bass is listed at 3!!! for a alder guitar i would want one listed at 6/7 or higher, something high in mids, and lower in treble. Demon is pretty harsh so in alder it would probably be icepicky. It sounds pretty good in my friend's ibanez sz720 but thats mahogany

Re: What's got more low mids than a C-5?

Actually in the tone chart the SH14 (custom 5) is listed as 6/3/8. So, with the bass being at 6 that would seem to be punchier than most other pickups except the Custom which I have already tried and that sounded horrible. BTW, what frequencies does DUncan go by when measuring bass, mid and treble? As we all know, mids have a very large range anywhere from around 120 Hz to 7kHz or so. So which frequency do they go by when they list the mids for these pickups?

Re: What's got more low mids than a C-5?

oh **** woops i was thinking custom custom not custom 5 :smack: sorry about that :laugh2:

Re: What's got more low mids than a C-5?

ah well then thats why alder doesn't have much mids and neither does the custom 5. So thats why.

So what didn't you like about the custom in your LP?

as for the frequencies they measure i bet its over a range and not a certain frequency. Probably something like bass 80-200, mids 200-2000 and treble 2000 and up i wondered about that before too though. and generally in regular audio mids are considered 200-2500hz or so, not to 7K just an fyi. i think the guitar frequency range is much smaller from 80hz-4Khz so its probably guaged differently.

The C-5 actually has the nicest bass out of almost all the Duncans. It sounds best in LP's and PRS though. For Alder, the 59, C-5, JB, Screamin Demon, and Jazz bridge all sound really good, but you may have to try a few before you settle on one. If you don't mind paying more, I think you'd like a custom shop Brobucker or 78 Model.

Well, I just tried an Air Zone in that guitar and ALMOST kept it there. It's got more bass but most of all more MIDS. An overbearing amount of mids, reminds me a lot of a hot rails. Still sounds pretty good though, but the mids were starting to get to me, so I put the C-5 back in. I might try a JB (trembucker) if I can get my hands on one cheap.
