I've heard that they put 490R's since recently in'm. No details on the Epi site though. Anyone know The Thruth?

thanks,

Pickups modelled after the 490R's and 500T's but not the real things I can assure you of that. The Elitist models come with actual Gibson pickups but not the made in Korea/made in China models.

Re: What's in a Epi Custom

they sound pretty decent for stock pickups thats for sure, i was so close to picking that guitar up, but couldn't get over how light it was, i'm used to heavy ass les pauls. The good thing was you could sit with it and it was very balanced
great sounding guitar, plays great too. I might pick a used one up off ebay. Anyone know how thick the maple cap is?

A Les Paul that plays great and sound good... and you let it go because it was a light one... That was a gem, IMO! Your back would have thank you.

I played one lately, they are nice, not sure the pups are higher output than PAFs though. But they are quite thick and the neck was way too thick for my taste.

Re: What's in a Epi Custom

They play good for the price, I was thinking of picking up a white custom someday and changing all the hardware and throw in a set of PG's, that would be awesome.

But the stock pickups dont do it for me, they have a sort of blanket over speaker effect that i don't like, not really that defined sound.

A bad thing is that you dunno if its made from basswood or mahogany.

Basswood just isnt les paul wood imo.

Re: What's in a Epi Custom

Standards are mahogany/alder, not Basswood. Same with the Customs.

The stock Epi pickups sound like they have a sort of blanket over speaker effect because they are heavily wax potted. Take the cover off and there's the pickup in a brick of wax, no kidding. I did an experiment where I took all that wax off and put the covers back on to see what difference it would make. They opened right up and sound much better now.

I was looking to get a Custom a little more than a year ago when I came across the Standard Plus that I eventually bought. It played/sounded/felt better than all the Customs in the store.

Rid can comfirm this!

It is made of Basswood with a maple top.

I dunno about the new ones.

Re: What's in a Epi Custom

I know mine is not Basswood, same with any of them made in the new China facility.

Re: What's in a Epi Custom

If its got a good weight then it's guaranteed not to be basswood as that's a light wood.

I think its heavy as hell, but compared to others it isnt that bad, the woodgrain looks greenish which is supposed to be Basswood? And its quite soft.

Re: What's in a Epi Custom

Have you weighed yours? Mine is 7.5 lbs. which is really light for a Les Paul so I know mine is a lighter mahogany type wood, like Luan or something like that. My Tele and Kramer both weigh in at 8 lbs. The Kramer I know is maple. Not sure about the Tele, it could be ash, it could be alder.

The old ones must be all over the map spec-wise then. I installed a 59/JB combo in a friend's old MIk Std. along with some extra routing for switches and that one seemed to have a real mahogany body and maple top with a thin flame veneer. It sounded brighter than my Gibby std. unplugged, but it still sounded very much like a LP after the electronics swap.
