Whats the best acoustic available for $300?

Re: Whats the best acoustic available for $300?

Some of the solid top Yamahas
Alvarez
Seagull
Epiphone Doves and Hummingbirds

those are pretty much the best ones I have found. I was in this exact same boat a few months ago. Honestly, if you can just bump your range to $400, the choices get much better. Though yesterday I just happened to have stumbled upon a kickass $300 solid top Yamaha that was excellently built with nice white binding and a beautiful abalone rosette. Had a nice chunky neck and everything just the way I like it

Exactly what kind of acoustic are you looking for? Like body size, scale length, purpose, etc

Re: Whats the best acoustic available for $300?

I sifted through several and found a mitchell at GC that I've had four years now.

You can find some nice playing and sounding Takamines for that price.

Re: Whats the best acoustic available for $300?

I'd look at Seagull, Norman, and Takamine to start.

The trick is to play every guitar and pick out the best ones. With cheaper guitars, especially acoustics, there can be a big difference between guitars of the same model.

Don't forget to look at the used section.

Some of the Made in Canada brands can be excellent values..."Simon and Patrick" and "Art and Lutherie" . Both are made by "Godin" and usually are a good value. I have 2 Yamaha's and they are both OK.

Simon and Patrick, Art and Lutherie and Seagull are owned by Godin. Seagull is the higher end (I love my $1000 artist series acoustic) but S&P and A&L both make great guitars

Re: Whats the best acoustic available for $300?

well, a bigger guitar would be nice. its hard to find a jumbo in this price range right?

besides that, any guitar in a "standard" size would do, im not sure how you classify em really, but i dont want a small guitar, something that sustains would be nice ( since when is sustain a bad thing? )

300 bucks is 300 bucks. Anything in that range is about the same. Nowadays qaulity is pretty amazing at that pricepoint. I like the Dean acoustics.

I can't agree with that. There's a lot of variation at that price range, even between guitars of the same exact model. And the low price is part of the reason for it. Because it's cheaper, the materials and workmanship are less consistent. Sometimes you get a good one, sometimes you get a lemon.

In the end, just play as many guitars as you can get your hands on, then pick the one you like the most.

Re: Whats the best acoustic available for $300?

i would try to find a used 70's era yamaha. I have an FG-335E and it sounds great, people have offered me up to $700 for it... but i wont sell it. Only guitar i have played that comes close is a taylor, and breedlove sounds a little better. Its over 30 years old, so old acoustics typically sound good. Try to find an old FG-335, not the new F-335. They are Martin D-12 sized and sound great. and fairly cheap

Re: Whats the best acoustic available for $300?

If you were willing to spend just a little bit more you could probably get a used Taylor, Baby or Big Baby. The Baby series are laminate guitars but they play and sound good.

thanks for all the opinions guys!

i think ill try to find an alvarez, but i wont be closed minded about other brands or models.

by the way, what are those big jumbo gibsons like?

Re: Whats the best acoustic available for $300?

Alvarez makes some amazing acoustics for the money.

Seagulls seem pretty good for the money as well.

Re: Whats the best acoustic available for $300?

Look for a pre-Fender Tacoma. They are right up there with Martin... I have both and can tell you that the Tacoma (which are very expensive to buy new) hangs right in there tone, volume and playability wise.

They can be found quite inexpensive on ebay if you have patience.

+1
A quick search shows that Yamaha is extremely well regarded in this price range due to being consistet in producing quality guitars, something that as our friend above notes is not all that common amongst the majority of manufacturers.
