What's the best playing guitar you've ever picked up?

With all these great threads that the ACEMAN is throwing up here and all the fantastic guitars, it made me think about what guitar has really felt so good you did not want to put it down. Forget looks, forget sound... just think about how it played. You may well have not bought the guitar, you may not have wanted it or even been able to afford it... it may have been so ugly it put you off.

This is for fun, so let's not BS each other and just say it's our most expensive guitar (although it may well be).

So, I'll start. As stated above no BS... so it's not either of my LP's, it wasn't the super expensive Gibson guitar that was built by Tom Murphy for the '92 NAMM show. My Wayne T Type is the one. It plays so easily, the action was so low I had to raise it although there were no dead spots or buzzing, it balances beautifully and is nice and light. The neck is similar to a MM EVH or Peavey Wolf but just a little wider at the nut. It's a beast of a guitar and I have took that guitar into shops to play it back to back against PRS, Tyler and Suhrs with a view to getting a guitar that may equal it but looks better i.e not so plain but I have always ended up going home with the Wayne!

What have you played that was simply awesome?

i'd say either the EVH Wolfgang i tried... or a Ernie Ball Privite Reserve Axis i tried... there has been a few that knocked my socks off...

Re: What's the best playing guitar you've ever picked up?

Any semi decent guitar can be set up to play like butta'. The $99 special I bought for my kids to use plays like a dream after I tweaked it.

Re: What's the best playing guitar you've ever picked up?

The nicest playing.

I really like how I set up my SG.... My guitar teacher has a strat that just is so smooth, I like that one a lot. It's a 94 AM Std.... And a LP R9. Best LP I've ever played.

If I had to pick one.... maybe the LP but I don't know.

Re: What's the best playing guitar you've ever picked up?

Best playing I have not owned: Back in the early 90s a local small shop in NOVA (where I bought my Heritage H150C) was a Schecter dealer- the original MIA super strats. I never bought one but every single one they had was the best playing instrument I can remember. I'd play them every time I'd go into the shop. Effortless, and pro-grade setup right outta the case and onto the racks.

Best I have owned: My original PSR Custom 10 top from 1987...I learned alot of "technique" on that guitar because it was so ridiculously easy to play.

A 1968 Gibson SG, and a PRS SE Santana.

They both played so smooth and easily it was ridiculous.

Re: What's the best playing guitar you've ever picked up?

The first one that comes to mind is a WAL Custom.

In the early Eighties, I once wandered into Rod Argent's Keyboard Shop on London's Denmark Street - a veritable Aladdin's Cave of analogue synthesizers. They also stocked Boss pedals. I asked to try out a CE-2 or -3 Chorus but, wouldn't you know it, the only stringed instruments in the shop were a Chapman Stick and three stunning WAL Custom basses. :naughty:

Probably my JEM7DBK. I'm having trouble imagining a more comfortable guitar. Everything I play on it seems to flow effortlessly.

The middle of the road PRS setup. Wide/fat neck which is 1-11/16h nut and a half circle in the back with a medium fretboard radius (10" or so). Frets not too large.

Long ago I picked up some V-neck strat that I liked a lot but I can't reproduce now what it was. A Warmoth boatneck is horrible.

Re: What's the best playing guitar you've ever picked up?

In high school in the early 70's a teacher brought in a few of his guitars.
Real nice acoustics, strats, teles and a few gibbos.
I was playing classical at the time and thought these steel string things
could never match the complexities in tone and articulation a real kickass
classical / flamenco guitar could deliver.

He gives me this early 60's Tele with a 7.25 inch radius neck, and action that
you could think in your head and the chord would play itself. I could not believe
that your left hand was so intrinsicly linked to the lighnes of touch.
Impressed, yet still not convinced due to the crampness I felt with an
electric 1 5/8 nut, I dismised the merits of an electric guitar.

Many years later, and being accustomed to the many various "tools"
that we employ, I have been fortunate to have accumulated a number
of "tools" that do employ the best merits that an "atypical guitar"
would merit in it's own genre.

My theory is " A Tool for a Purpose " and henceforth............................
wegotta get a bucketload of more guitars to do the job right!!!!

I'll continue later.......it's bloody late and tomorrow will be best.

Re: What's the best playing guitar you've ever picked up?

My LP Studio is really ON right now. The lowest action I have ever been able to achieve with any of my guitars. With the problems I have been having with my left hand/wrist it's been really nice to keep from causing me problems.

Re: What's the best playing guitar you've ever picked up?

my Epi goth explorer.... it is effortless to play, neck is smooth, angles and set-up....it just fits me perfectly.

I can't explain in words how well it plays.

I bought it as a blem from MF website..... they took $200 bucks off for a tiny dinger in the "side" of the fretboard up near the body....

I haven't found anything that I like playing more than my old Strat.

A local shop by me carries Gibsons and they had a '59 les paul VOS and it was amazing. The set up was pure gold, and it felt awesome

Some Suhr strat.

My ex's dad's Fender Custom Shop Strat.

A perfectly worn in '88 RFR Ibanez RG550.

Re: What's the best playing guitar you've ever picked up?

I tried a Fender Custom Shop Showmaster in Machinehead Music a while back that was just sublime. The neck just felt right, and it's acoustic tone practically leapt from it. I wish I'd had the cash to take that one home...
