Normally I don't recommend power attenuators but for high-gain amps I'm with DSS3. 2x12 and a THD Hot Plate will do ya just fine.

Forget about the tube/SS debate. The best thing you can do is to buy a Valvetronix head like an AD60VTH or AD120VTH, and just use it on the Mesa 4-12 you already have. It'll only cost you around $400, and you can get any type of tone you want. Trust me, it'll sound WAY better than trying to get metal out of some little combo. With the variable wattage on back, you can turn it very low and still have heavy tight gain, and if it's on full blast, it's just as loud as most tube amps. I'm a tube snob, but still advise you to use an amp like this in your bedroom.
