What's the cheapest midi setup?

I was wondering, what with the extrememly high priced midi setups, which one is the cheapest. I'm looking for the absolute cheapest way for me to record with my guitar in midi. The reason I'm so desperate is because I have a class in High School (I'm a senior) called Music Technology I and we're given a progression, and are told that we need a melody, percussion, bass, etc. and we have to make an original song based on those specifications. Sounds awesome, right? The only problem is that the only controllers we have to use are keyboard and a clarinet controller. That totally sucks. My teacher said that I can use whatever means I have personally in the classroom for recording, as long as it's midi. So that's why I need to know what the cheapest midi setup is. If any of you have any ideas, let me know.

Re: What's the cheapest midi setup?

you could try to find a used setup with a GK2 hex pickup and an old roland gtr synth that would translate the notes you play to midi

for something as simple as a one off class project, i'd probably tough it out with keyboard .. good enough is good enough sometimes, yunno?

Re: What's the cheapest midi setup?

the cheapest currently available is looking for a used GK-2a pickup on eBay, and a GI-10 converter...midi it into your sequencing program, and you are set...still will cost maybe $3-400 total. Midi guitar is an expensive undertaking.

Yeah, it's really damn expensive. Also, I'm not going to have to tough it out with the keyboards since I, just in the past day or so, figured out that I can import midi files into the program for use in my project if I made them myself. This means that, using a program such as Power Tab, I can create tabs and export the midis for use in the program. I've already loaded an insane, shred-oriented melody for our second class project. Thanks though for the info about the hex pickup and synth. 300-400 dollars is the cheapest I've seen for a midi-able guitar setup. Thanks guys.
