Anybody know what the difference is between the Alnico II Pro and the Slash model? Specifically for the bridge version.

Thanks in advance for the opinions/advice.

Put a famous dude's name on something and it magically transforms into snake oil!

For serious though... it's very similar just voiced to sound like the exact set in his original Appetite shadow-built '59 clone. Now, what I don't understand exactly, is that if he was using the original A2P's from the 80's, why is it a slightly different 'pup? I was under the assumption SD kept their winds the same over the years, a la '59 and JB, etc., as people who claim they are different are quickly shot down by the official boys at SD that they are the same. So I'm not exactly sure why it would be any different from the normal A2P.

That's what I'm confused about. I like the sound of lots of folks, but I'm not a blind follower, nor do I believe that just because it sounds great on one person's wooden instrument that it will translate 1 to 1 to mine.

I'm wanting to try out an Alnico II Pro and am trying to figure out if the Slash model is anything worth considering beyond the marketing and fluff.

Here you go.

Here's the deal with the new Slash pickup. Virtually all the recordings you've heard Slash play on since 1986 were made with one guitar. Contrary to popular opinion, it's not a Max: it's a Derrig and it has stock Alnico II Pro pickups. The reason he uses that guitar, as opposed to any of his dozens of other Les Pauls, is because the Derrig just has a livelier, punchier, sound. When he plays live, he's less critical, but for recording, it's almost always the Derrig.

The new Slash pickup lets his other Les Pauls, what he calls his "live guitars," sound like the Derrig. That's it.

from what i can tell,
the slash ap2 bridge growls more than the normal ap2

I've been using the set in my '07 epi slash signature for about 6 months and, after swapping out the original ap2's, the biggest difference, to my ears any way, is the neck pickup. it has less of the single coily type of sound, a la intro to "sweet child of mine" and more of the rolled tone sound of the "november rain" solo without having to roll the tone all the way down.

So are the winds something special to any ap2

Re: What's the difference between the Alnico II Pro and the Slash model?

just slightly overwound. i beleive when i had mine installed, they measured 8k on the neck and 8.9k on the bridge.

Re: What's the difference between the Alnico II Pro and the Slash model?

The resonant peak is quite a bit lower, 6khz on the bridge and 6.4 on the neck. Definitely more growl. I'm getting a set at the end of the month, can't wait.

The Slash set is wound hotter. I just bought a 1991 N.O.S. set of A2P's and the bridge has a 8.32k ohm reading. The Duncan tone chart says that they read 7.85k ohms. So pickups vary somewhat. I would guess that the Derrig got a slightly overwound set back in the '80's.
