VHT, Peavey, Metro Amp, MESA/Boogie, Bogner, Soldano etc are all amazing amps.

But to compare the build quality of a Boogie to a 1970s Hiwatt is just mad, no amp has ever touched those in terms of build quality.

The Road King is a pretty versatile amp, but my Mesa of choice would be a Mark III or IV for sure.

The price in the UK for a Mesa combo is £2k, which i used to think was expensive, but now i don't think so.

All Mesa's are expensive in europe though.

Not as bad as Bogner's though! :O

You don't get cranked tones out of a Rectifier, that's not the purpose of them.

Rectifiers are all about getting an extremely hot preamp to beat the living sh*t out of a clean power amp. That's how they get high gain amps to punch so hard and why there are very few low wattage high gain heads. Too much power amp compression and they loose the little dynamics that they have and turn too mushy poo.

I get what you're saying.. and I agree to the logic behind it.. but to clarify do you usually have your master volume pretty close to the gain setting for your distorted recto tones?.. from what you said I'm thinking that you might be a 'dime the gain, turn up channel volume to taste' mesa user.. so many mesa users always have the gain cranked and basically use the channel volume as a master volume control (there's an output knob which can control this instead).. I believe the key to a good mesa roar is to find the right interplay between pre-amp and power amp juice

Actually yeah....less pre-amp cascade gain, more pre-amp level feeding the amp....though it very good to get the master up to "working" level also.

Anyone who does, or has owned a Recto knows that they sound much better when that thing gets pumping.

There's my settings.

I agree with you fully, but a Rectifier isn't an amp you use for power amp overdrive. You want it hot enough that it smooths out, but held back enough that it keeps it's punch. If you want power amp grind there's much better amps out there for it.... such as Orange.

Doesn't matter how you do it, you get the same amount of signal hitting the power amp either way.

The only time you need to think about it is when you have effects in the loop. The Recto has a very hot preamp, too high a channel master setting and you'll be overdriving/distorting anything effects you put in the loop (clipping delays aren't cool).

Both masters are between the preamp and the power amp. Turing one up and the other down has the same result as turning one down and the other up. The only thing that matters is that you get a balance between the two channels and the effects you're running in the loop, then run it as hot as the soundman will let you.

yea just looking at your racktifier (clever eh?) I can tell you have the right idea screamingdaisy.. and just to clear things up modestcargo the channel volume (which is labelled master) and the master volume (which is labelled 'output'.. silly eh?) are the exact same thing.. the only difference is that the output volume effects all 2, 3, or in my case 4 (roadster) channels.. I ignore the output button by flipping the "hard bypass" switch when I play with settings and usually set the volume to how loud I'd **LIKE** to play during band rehearsal.. then I flip the output knob back into the loop when I need to lower my playing level for self-practice or whatev

although.. I'm currently looking into buying an 8 ohm THD hotplate and keeping my roadster on hard bypass and using the power attenuator to adjust output volume.. a lot of people don't realize that turning that Output knob low really sucks the life out of the amp
