What's the difference between Vibrato and Tremolo?

Re: What's the difference between Vibrato and Tremolo?

technically vibrato is variation in pitch and tremolo is variation in volume (amplitude)

various companys are guilty of messing it up

Which means that the thing hanging off the end of everyone's Strat is not really a tremolo bar, despite the fact that we all call it that. Except for the people that call it a whammy bar, which is a ridiculous name but perhaps slightly more accurate since it and the Digitech Whammy pedal do similar things, in very different degrees.

Well, I beleive it's Fender that can be credited with creating the confusion. As said earlier in the thread, vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch, while tremelo is a fluctuation in volume. However, Fender of course decided to load their strats with tremelo bars, and release amps with a tremelo effect labled as vibrato, causing one hell of a confusion.

Leo Fender´s mistake caused this.

If Leo had been a musician, there would be Vibrato Bars, Floyd Rose Vibratos and such... so we either make asses of ourselves calling ait a tremolo bar, or we find funky names like Wiggle Stick, Whammy Bar, Wang Bar and such for it ;)

Re: What's the difference between Vibrato and Tremolo?

This isn't a really big deal, but is it vault worthy?

Re: What's the difference between Vibrato and Tremolo?

Tremolo actually applies to an alternation of pitch and/or volume. Most people complain about "tremolo" being a misnomer, but they are either being pretentious or trying to make small talk. Vibrato, however, applies strictly to pitch.
