Whats the difference with Duncan Distortion™ SH-6 and TB-6

Hi, I wondering what does the SH-6 mean, and TB-6 mean. Is one for the bridge and one for the neck?

TB-6 is spaced wider for fender and floyd rose trems. No difference in tone.

This, basically. SH for Gibson-spaced bridges and TB for Fender/Floyd Rose-spaced bridges. Oddly, Gibson themselves is using a wider spacing on their own bridge pickups these days, so a Trembucker really works for everything. That said, it's not very common for SH models to be a problem on Fender/Floyd Rose spaced bridges unless you keep your pickups REALLY low, thus the E strings lose volume. It's... I'd say mostly... a visual issue.

Yes, welcome!

No difference in tone.

Not 100% true... The wider bobbins necessitate slightly more wire being wound onto them to get the same turn count. This means that a TB will be slightly darker with a slightly lower resonant peak than its corresponding SH version.

Question...
Is the TB-6 wound to the same resistance as the SH-6?
Or, is the TB-6 wound to the same number of winds as the SH-6?

I was under the impression that they were wound to the same resistance.

Same resistance would give you the same mass of copper but slightly fewer winds around on the TB, would it not?

They are wound to turn count.. .not resistance. None of SD"s pickups are wound to resistance.

Winding them to the same turn count produces closer in sound pickups than if you left off a few hundred turns to even out the resistance.

That's what I figured, since tone is mostly dependent on coil geometry as far as the copper goes. That's why they can make 7 and 8 string '59s.

Thanks for that info, Edge. I didn't know that they were wound to the same turn count. I know that increased wire length will give increased resistance, but doesn't the higher resistance (from more wire on the TB with the same turn count as an SH) give it a slight increase in the mids?

Kinda... it drops the the resonant peak a touch which makes it seem like it has a pinch more mids with a touch less highs. Its not like a wow night and day difference. Think of it similar to backing off the presence on your amp a notch and upping the mids a half notch.

Here Doc Ill throw another tidbit of info at you that you may or may not know. Ok Im sure you've heard SD get flak because the TB's have wider bobbins and require a different pickup ring versus dimarzio that gives you F spacing on the same size bobbin. Many have questioned why not just do it like dimarzio.

Like many things there is no free lunch, to widen the poles in a F spaced dimarzio they had to change the shape of the inside of coil. The inside wraps of a coil have a greater effect on the voicing of things than the outer ones do. So even F spaced dimarzios run into similar issues that to move the poles the voicing of the pickup has to change some.

Thanks, I didn't know that.
