What's the Dimebucker like?

flipside

Long story short, punk music is getting boring and stupidly easy, so i've been listening to a lot of metal and shred lately, and that is where my playing is taking me. I am far from a shredder right now, but i was thinking of getting a new guitar in an ESP horizon, because tmy Les Paul and its huge neck heel is making it very difficult for me to reach the upper frets. The ESP Horizon comes with a JB, but i love my Les Paul and don't want to retire it completely so i was thinking of putting the JB in my Paul and putting a Dimebucker in the Horizon. I havn't heard a lot on here about the Dimebucker and was wondering what the general consensus is on it, or should i just stick with the stock JB. Thanks for youre input guys.

Dimebuckers sound good in 24.75" scale, all mahogany guitars with set-necks and Floyd Rose trems.

Oh yeah, the guitar should be kinda X-shaped, too :)

Re: What's the Dimebucker like?

really? why is that, and if that is true why is there a production model?

Re: What's the Dimebucker like?

I'm just giving my opinion on it. I tried it two or three times, in an Epiphone Les Paul, an LTD M-100, an LTD Viper, Kramer Focus 6000, and at least three different Ibanez RGs, and I always ended up going with something else.

It's got some odd qualities I started off liking, then ended up disliking. One being the twanginess. Another being the sludginess.

As a point of reference, my favorite pickups are the Duncan Invader & Distortion, EMG 81/85, and DiMarzio Air Zone.

hmmm. i would use anything but sludginess to describe Dime's tone. I love my invader, but sometimes it seems a bit sludgy, and if the Dimebucker is sludgier then thats not cool. The thing that pisses me off is its hard to find a guitar with a dimebucker in it to try.

Re: What's the Dimebucker like?

Outside of a Dean ML, and not plugged into a solid state Randall, it's not gonna sound that much like him. Perhaps slimey is a better term than sludgey.

Re: What's the Dimebucker like?

Do a search for my opinion and other opinions on the Dimebucker.

Re: What's the Dimebucker like?

One of they guys I play with has a Dimebucker in a Jackson Randy Rhoads guitar and it sounds AWESOME through my Fender Ultimate Chorus (Solid State, 2x12)

I can't say enough about how much it rules. Very clear, very saturated, perfect for those chug-chug chiggity chug-chug-chug rhythms.

My face has been successfully melted

Re: What's the Dimebucker like?

Some dude posted clips of the Dimebucker on an alder-bodied strat and...to say the least, his tone was IMPRESSIVE... very very thick sound... very heavy.

Re: What's the Dimebucker like?

It sounds less organic than other pups like the distortion. It gets great pinch harmonics and has a lot of high end. I find it's not good for clean tones IMO. I have one in a basswood Ibanez RG 1570. It's great for leads. It doesn't get muddy with high gain.

Thick sound???? To me it sounded more like a pissed off weadeater. I did not hear thick in its sound AT all!

Re: What's the Dimebucker like?

Dimebucker is good for playing Damageplan riffs.

Your ears are in for sonic hell and destruction if you play in standard tunning, though. (And not the good kind, mind you.)

Re: What's the Dimebucker like?

I would be running it in a Mohogany ESP, into an Ashdown Fallen Angel which is very bass heavy already so i am thinking that might round out the high's and sizzle of the Dimebucker into some face melting tone. The ESP does already come with a JB which is such a tried tested and true pickup already. It was just an idea i had with the Dimebucker. I think I am gonna have to try one out before i make a decision, thanks for all your input guys.
