What's the history story on the Custom Custom?

Re: What's the history story on the Custom Custom?

Too much mids is not at all a bad description for the CC. But it will cut through the mix like a chainsaw! That what makes it nice and crunchy....Even though the lows could be bigger/tighter - the mid effect is just overwhelming. I like it in a paul...

Yeah, sorry if it sounded like I meant it bad. It's a good thing, especially for certain styles of music (for example, Queens of the Stone Age gets their brutal crunch tone from it I think).

I wouldn't mind having a CC or a JB again, to be honest: both are nice pickups. I bet with a tone wood that has naturally tight lows, the CC would be killer.

Re: What's the history story on the Custom Custom?

The "special" (Alnico 5) version of the Custom was in the Godin AND guys on the original forum (anyone remember the simple text message board that let people post without registering?) did also come up with the idea of swapping in the Alnico 5 magnet and calling it the "Custom Custom Custom". I remember Robert_S and Jeremy really pushing it, Robert in his Jimmy Page-model Les Paul (double cream with gold poles) and Jeremy in an SG.

Re: What's the history story on the Custom Custom?

I had a Custom Custom in my Hamer Monoco Super Pro and still have one in one of my Strats. It's sm-o-o-o-o-th! Lots of mids. I like it best moved very close to the strings...picks up more treble and gives it a little more bite. Very easy on the ears type of pickup. You never hear anyone complaining that it's to bright, that's for sure. It's one of my faves. Lew

I have a JB in my Charvel Standard. I've got a 500K volume and a 250K tone. It sounds absolutely yummy.

But I don't palm mute powerchords...a common complaint!

Re: What's the history story on the Custom Custom?

The Duncan Custom isn't just an overwound PAF.

The first fat distortion type pickups used awg44 wire to get enough winds onto the bobbins, and still occupy the same space that the awg42 coils of a PAF type pickup take.

Going from there to fill the same volume with awg43 wire for those who want something not as dramatic as a distortion-type pickup (the JB is in the distortion "class") but hotter than a PAF isn't the greatest invention, but it is more than just putting more winds on a PAF.

Trying out different magnets takes anybody a couple of minutes. The real deal is to convince a commercial maker to put another tiny variation of an existing thing into an already overcrowded catalog and deal with all the resulting stock management issues (aka sell what you build).

Very useful thread guys. I've just ordered what I need to put an APH-1 in the neck of my tele, and was considering a custom custom for the bridge.

That's actually a very popular set for players wanting a big sounding A2 set.
The CC has thick mids and more buttery high end. If you like more open highs, get the C-5 though. The CC is like 777 on the EQ. The C-5 is like 958 on EQ, from Bass, Mid, Treb.
