I think you need to go with something like a JCM800 with the pre and post turned way up. You'll probably lose the creamy part if you don't have enough post gain.

+1. The roar is all about output stage overdrive. If a wound-up 50-watt 1/2 stack is too loud to be practical, consider an attenuator or smaller amp. There are a lot of EL84-base amps out there these days that are going for the "Marshall" thing at manageable volume rather than the "Vox" thing.

el84s have a great tone but it doesnt have as much beef as el34's

a 50w plexi style circut hit with a hot humbucker thru a 2x12 cab with greenbacks should be great for what you are looking for. maybe even with a od pedal infront depending on how hard you are running the amp

...And if you're looking for a great 2x12 cab, PM me! :)

Got one loaded with Celestion V30s.

Roll that pre back, that is where the buzz gets you. They had a lot of 'cleanish' tones, medium gain at the most. Remember, there are tons and tons of studio tricks done with that band, they really pushed the boundaries of 80s production. Lot of compression and other analog goodies to get that tone silky smooth. Likely sounded a bit different in its unpolished state.

Ok, as much as I like Def Leppard, always bare in mind that as much as Mutt Lange likes to use real instruments - he is notorious for replacing drums, guitars, and even re-singing vocals. Yes, he is THAT talented. BTW he writes half the stuff as well!

Keep that in mind. Even Def uses a lot of Marshall rack gear now.

If you want some smooth tone also try things like good pedals like a Fulltone FD2 or a Xotic BB.

I doubt that he did it with Leppard, can not imagine Collins or Elliot coming to the mixing session and going "hey ... that's not me playing, mate .... Its allright I suppose, kinda like it ..."

Maybe they were barred from the mixing session... ;)

You've just put Deff Leppard in the same bag with Milli Vanili.

Yeah, I was joking. And I like and respect the guys from Leppard. Their tone on High & Dry was awesome.

But who knows... big producers for big labels have been known to do a lot of the recording themselves and/or hire session guys to do it better than the band was capable of (not saying that Leppard wasn't capable).

Speaking of tone, does anyone know what Paul Dean was using when he recorded Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose". I LOVE the pissed-off Plexi sound on that song. To my ears it's right behind EVH's brown sound for the early VH albums.
