You know-I have one and don't know what it does-is it for an ext. cab? Never had one of those either:smack:
Thanks

Re: What's the "line out" for?

It's a line level signal from the pre-amp of your amplifier. You could use it to send a signal to a mixer or a recorder. But it usually sounds like crap compared to using a microphone on the speaker.

You should pick up a copy of Yamaha's "Sound Reinforcement Handbook" and I recommend this book to anybody who has questions like this one. It's a wealth of knowledge for about 20 bucks. You'll learn a lot. :)

keep a tuner there!

Careful with doing that. In some amps, connecting a cord to the line out disables the internal speaker, much like connecting an exernal speaker cab to a combo. My Valvetronix does that.

For using line out to a mixer instead of a mic, get the Behringer Ultra-G DI box. It has a 4x12 cab simulator built in and sounds really good.

Not all amp line-outs run from the preamp, too. Some do actually pad down the output signal, in the same way a speaker-sim+load box does.

Otherwise, there's no real effective difference from using the effects send if you have a loop, aside from convenience.

+1, that's a pretty good book. i had to get it for a class last year, and not only was i happy that it was full of good info, but the broke college student in me was happy that it was that cheap.

I'll 2nd the "be careful" statement, some line outs, especially on tube amps, is taking the signal that is going to the speaker, after the power tubes! It does pad it down to line level and alot of them have an adjustment, but it still may be a little hot for a tuner. As far as it sounding like crap run to a mixer, that's what Red Boxes and other direct boxes with built in speaker sims are for.
