What's The Scoop? JB / Demon

I have one of each but don't have them installed. I'm wondering the fundamental differences between the two.

I know there are a ton of variables (pots, tone, wiring, type of wood, etc.). So I guess I'm looking for more of a high level difference between the two.

Thanks.

Re: What's The Scoop? JB / Demon

I've had 'em both in the samr axe. This is my take on them:

The Demon is very tight, focused, and lets a good amount of the guitar's natural voice through. For tight, chunky palm muted rythms, the Demon is king. No matter how much gain you throw at it, the bottom end stays tight and coherent. The lead voicing is more PAF-ish than anything, but it still has enough authority to cut through a loud band. Cleans are good and it does an awesome job of semi-distorted jangle pop rythm playing.

The JB is more compressed and has much more mid range content. It's not as open sounding as the Demon, but that works in its favor when you're looking to play thick, smooth, biting lead lines. It's not going to chunk and thump on the low end like the Demon, but it'll get the job done for power chord style rythm playing. The high endresponse is much rounder than the Demon's, but it cuts through at least as well, if not better. This is due to that infamous high-mid spike in the JB.

If I needed to take one axe to the show, I would load it with a Demon. If I can take one with a 'bucker and another with something cleaner and more open, I'd take a JB loaded axe for lead stuff.

Re: What's The Scoop? JB / Demon

is the JB better suited to certain kinds of rhythm playing, like power chords as you say? A lot of people seem anti-JB as far as rhythm goes.

For palm muted powerchords and fast riffing, the JB wouldn't be my first choice.

If your bass player has a tight, punchy, tone that dominates the bass frequencies, the JB does a fine job of filling in the mids and low mids. It is loose on the lows and it kind of roars, but it does fill up a lot of space.

It's just way too fat. You can play rhythm, but one string at a time :)

The JB really is for people who do rhythm on the other pickup and use the bridge pickup for lead exclusively. Just my opinion, of course.

Well, for metal PM riffing at least Dave Mustaine must think it is okay..
Of course it's a matter of personal preferences, but it isn't strictly bad for metal/rock rhythm playingm it's just not the best choice to go with bright amp and guitar.

I never said theJB was bad for metal, but I do think that there's other pickups that do the job better. The Distortion, Custom, Demon, and PG+ come to mind.

Re: What's The Scoop? JB / Demon

How are the pinch harmonics on the demon? I've had one but it was in the neck position. I love the JB's harmonics and I use it for fast/rhythm riffing and it works just fine. Its just better out of a brighter guitar.

Re: What's The Scoop? JB / Demon

The JB makes it easier to do pinch harmonics. I think it's because of the higher output and thicker midrange.
