What's the tightest 50 watts amp you ever tried?

Re: What's the tightest 50 watts amp you ever tried?

Lucky you,a full power 100 watt cheerleader usually screams more. She's tighter of course. LOL.
Seriously, back to topic,do you have any experience to share?

Re: What's the tightest 50 watts amp you ever tried?

Somewhat. In my opinion, if you're playing modern type metal in a band setting, you're better off with a 100 watt head. It's only 3db louder than the 50W equivalent, but you'll gain some much needed power section headroom. Modern metal is all about preamp gain, while (usually) preventing the power amp from becoming overly saturated. If you had both, it'd end up sounding a mess.
That said, Mesa makes really great 50W heads.

Re: What's the tightest 50 watts amp you ever tried?

I dunno... my Mesa DC-5 is pretty damn tight. It has the Mesa on-board graphic EQ and I run it through a 1960B. Use an EMG-loaded guitar and it is about as tight as I'll ever need.

Genz Benz El diablo... almost too tight for certain applications... darned good gain though.

Re: What's the tightest 50 watts amp you ever tried?

i had a boogie 50 caliber with the black shadow speaker 1x12 combo. Tight as a nuns nasty. Too much so for me tho....i ended up with a 22 watt fender cos its warmer.

Re: What's the tightest 50 watts amp you ever tried?

Splawn Competition is about the most pissed off and tight 50-watter out there.

Re: What's the tightest 50 watts amp you ever tried?

A heavily modded Laney Klipp through an ancient 4x12" Laney cab, no info about the speakers. Not sure about the mod but it really had the rage. I have the very same cab, loaded with Greenbacks. Unbeatable for a 4x12".

I wanna know your experience. High gain tube amp, head or combo,1x12 or 2x12 speaker layout.
Here we go!

Have not tested it myself, but i was in a mom n pop guitar shop when a very talented bloke tested it :

ENGL e530.

Re: What's the tightest 50 watts amp you ever tried?

I guess I should correct my question to "under 100 watts",so 60 watts amps are okay.
Sorry if I'm such a noob to this, but how much does Fryette Deliverence cost nowadays?
Everyone seems happy with their Mesas,Soldano and Fryette, but how about Riveras and Bogners?
I think those two are also famous for their modern crunch and tight low end.
I'm not in the market for a new amp yet,but still curiousity got me to ask.

To answer your question......

Fryette Deliverance Sixty brand new will run you around $1,500 US Dollars. In the used market you can find it generally around the $800-$1000 range.

In my opinion, it's one of the best (if not the best) amp in that price range. For being a stripped down, bare bones, no frills single channel amp, it can cover anything and is quite versatile.

I'll go into more details, if you like.....

Truthfully it all depends on your budget and your playing style. Bogner Shiva and XTC are staples in the boutique rock amp line. They also start with 2K+ brand new price tag.

Rivera, I don't have much experience but heard nothing but good things. In terms of heads, I haven't seen much selection though.

Soldano perfected the hot rodded Marshall JCM 800 sound. It is one aspect of the "Holy Grail of Tone" that everyone gravitates too.

Mesa's are solid amps. I really dug the distortion and surprisingly the clean channels on all the ones I played. The problem I faced is that it didn't really suit the style/tone of my band.

:)

As far as I can see from your sig, we have similar old friends. The difference is, my one wears 8 knobs and it's unmodded as far as I know (so is the Squier '51):

Apart from a wah and a delay pedal in the chain, it goes geetar -> cable (er...wireless) -> amp.

edit: Hm. iPhone makes a rather nice phaser (3:30) and talk box (3:50), doesn't it? :D
