Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Engl!!!
Powerball, Fireball, SE, Invader, Blackmore(for more oldschool thrash sounds), Savage.
All those amps have some of the finest Metal tones available but the interesting thing is that Engl managed to cmobine all this metalness with great other channels that makes all of them versetaille and tonefull for a lot of genres. That's why Engls slay most other metal amps imo
No Screamer? That thing is more old school trash then the Blackmore is, imo :)

Screamer also is a great amp, but i was just talking about the big head models. If we are talking combos or small heads the screamer definitely is great, although the sovereign kicks its tail ;)

Nooo... You be messin' with me ENGL?

:D

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

There's a lot of great manufacturers who make some great amps. All I know is my greatest metal tone was achieved through a Marshall Jubilee.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

I've plugged into almost all the popular channel switching heads, and out of all of them, this one does extreme metal better than all of them. Plugged into 2 4-12's side by side, this amp will disembowel a rhino!

:firedevil VHT Pittbull Ultra-Lead :headbang:

quiet simply, a brutal crushing amp for metal! it's LOUD and has an incredible clean channel. the distortion is a wonderful evil of its own kind. unlike anything out there...mere words can't describe it. what I like best about the Pittbull is that it has ZERO compression, even on the most vicious levels of distortion imaginable. very articulate across the entire frequency field...no mud or mush to be had. in short: LOUD, mean, articulate, and wide-open, with endless headroom.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Let the guys who actually play metal answer this one...

Yeah, Bogner and Diesel are cool, but way overpriced. I can get a better tone by layering a 5150 with a Dual Rectifier, and have enough left over to buy backups for each head.

For me, the ultimate heavy metal amp would be a stack of heads, from top to bottom:

Mark IV
pre-500 Mesa Dual Recto
Peavey JSX
VHT Pittbull Ultra Lead
ENGL Savage 120

Seriously... there are so many awesome amps you can buy for this genre - go play EVERYTHING you possibly can, and make your own decision.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Fender Metal Head.

Great clean and the loose drive has sooooooooooooooo much bawls. Plus 550 watts, it's INSANE!!!!

I shall one day own one of those, a Marshall JCM 900 (first on the list) and a Mesa Triple rectifier.

And find a way to run them all at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

I grew up playing metal....Mesa Recto and Mark IV;

If you want tight, get a Mark IV, you want roar, get the Recto series (I like the Recto also for shreddy type lead work - I have read lots of folks say the Recto doesn't work well for leads but they forgot to tell Buckethead that)

I personally favor the Road King...it is a little smoother and just a hair different in voicing from my 3 channel Recto (I have heard from guys that have had the early Rectos, that Road King channel four sounds like the first 500 Rectos did - I guess I would have liked one of those as well)

I have played an Uberschall and loved it, but the Mesa does more for me and for my $$.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

A friend of mine is conducting an interesting experiment with a local repair guy. They took a dual rec schematic and traced out only the stuff that was involved with the signal path, which basically meant they discarded three whole pages of the schematic up front and then traced through half of the components on the remaining two pages.

He's had the remaining circuit built into a matamp chassis, and it's going to be used as a basis for developing a high gain amp. Should be cool. And he has nice comparison amps: two splawns, an uberschall and a dual rec...

I single channel Dual Rectifier with only one voice (modern) and no FX loop would be a cool concept.

a joke, perhaps? :fingersx: those are 2 of the worst amps for metal ever made, imo. the JCM900 is pure buzzsaw like a broken Rat pedal and the Fender Metal Head, uhhhh :barf:

Wrong. The SLX model is an absolute screamer. Im not fond of the MKIII dual reverbs, but that SLX is a fantastic heavy metal amplifier. Both the guys in Pelican were using them on their UK tour a couple of weeks back. I would never accuse thier lone of being buzzsaw like.

But yeah, the Fender Metalhead is pretty nasty. I actually prefer the Mode 4, and that aint great.

my bad :nana:

whenever I hear someone say JCM900, I automatically think of the 4100. I bought one when it first came out...it was my first tube amp. I still hate that friggin thing. I swear it sounded like Marshall stuck a battery-drained Rat pedal inside of it :)

now the SL-X was a different story! I still have my 2100 head. it came stock with 5881 tubes, but I replaced them with Mullard NOS EL-34's. this amp screams...totally different voice than the 4100! great for shredding and old-school metal like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Mercyful Fate, et al.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Im not a good athourity on metal amps, but wouldnt a 5150, or a 6560 be supurb metal amps. Ive heard some re-donk-ulous metal tones out of a JSX.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

CRATE are used by bands such as Lamb of God, GWAR, ect... I've got the BV-120HR and all I can say Is WOW Bottom End!!...Crushing Metal sound IMO
