Whats under the cover? Bobbin colors...

I am possibly in the market for another set of Antiquity Humbuckers, and will most likely pull the covers off. The last time I bought some there was a vendor (that I may have found on here?) who pre-peeked under the screws and could sell you whatever bobin combination you wanted provided he had some in stock. The ones I have are "reverse" zebra with screws on black. I would love another set like that, but would take screw on white zebras or double white neck and double black bridge.

1) Is there anyone out there who does this these days?

2) If not and I just buy a covered set, what am I likely to find? Are they random or is there a standard?

Also, is it the same story for the Seth Lovers? I am also considering a set of those to be slightly different.

Thanks!

It’s random. Mine are one double black and one zebra.

I put the covers back on when I put them in my other LP.

I was always under the impression that it is random. You might be able to call and request something, though (except double creme).

Thanks for the replies! So no one knows of any dealers who pre-check? I don’t think it makes sense to go through the custom shop just for bobbin color, but will SD sell them as uncovered zebras at regular retail?

If you want uncovered pickups buy uncovered pickups. You can get different coil color combinations as a shop floor custom at minimal cost.

You can't request double cream any more?

You can still find double creme CS Pearly Gates pickups from JMI. They aren't Antiquities, but they are not all that far off from them either. A touch saltier, a little more snarl to them, but basically in the same tonal ballpark.

I have mine covered again because I don't like the way they look in my 1993 Standard (which is where they sound best), but here is what they looked like in my 16 Traditional.

God damn it Dimarzio.

If double creme were a Dimarzo original, I might sympathize with them, but since Gibson did it long before they did, I find the trademark obnoxious and refuse to ever buy their pickups.

Thanks to all for the shop floor custom tip. That sounds a lot cheaper than buying set after set until I find what I am looking for, and then having to buy a bunch of guitars for all the pickups that weren’t the right combo.
