What bass pickups and style of bass. will give me a punchy deep throated growl? And what type will give me that deep sonic thump?

What is the difference between a J bass and a P bass?

Well, a standard split-style P-bass sounds like that to me.

The major difference between J and P is that that it is a passive pickup set with mixing.

in general a p bass will have a bigger neck, and the pups are obviously quite different. a p bass has a deeper tone most of the time

On a P-bass, you tend to hear more of the fundamental of the note. Jazz bass pickups will have higher harmonics in there.

both basses can be punchy, the p bass will sound deeper

It's actually the same as guitar. Pickups towards the neck will be fatter and towards the bridge will be growlier. The catch is although everyone hates middle pickups, the P bass is the most legendary middle pickup of all time! It's harder to parse what bass pickups do because the bass designs are limited with no real universal designs for experimenting. There are also single coils and humbuckers. Both can growl but hums will be fatter.
