What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

Do you dig the basic Crybaby? The Classic? The -95?

Or do you have somebody's Signature Wah: Zakk Wylde, Hendrix, or Slash?

Or do you use the Buddy Guy wah--cause your GF likes POLKA DOTS!!!

Yeah, you might have a Budda, or a Fulltone, or some other boo-teek end-all-be-all that you paid a fortune for--don't want to hear about it.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

After trying several higher-priced wahs with more features, I found that I preferred the original crybaby. For me, as far as wahs go, less is more. I'm more interested in a smooth sweep and usable tones at either end, and not so much a huge wah effect.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

I love my original now that I got it sounding how I want it. It took a few mods to get it there though, including an Area 51 inductor.

Straight out of the box, it's between the Classic and Slash models for me.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

i had mentioned it in TGWIF's wah thread that i've started collecting and modding wahs and the majority of the ones i have right now are dunlops with a few other oddballs tossed in for good measure. i've also owned a LOT of wahs over the years from various brands. that said, my current favorite wah (of all brands) is the dunlop/custom audio electronics MC404. it's a killer wah and i'd take it over anything fulltone ever made (man those things are bland) and it beats out the area 51 i used to have too (that was a tough one to top) and the teese picture wah i tried also (which i felt was topped by the area 51). so that gets my vote for favorite dunlop. i do have two more on the way (hammett and evh sig) so i'm not sure how they'll factor in to my favorite choices since i'm told the hammett is real cool but i think the CAE is going to be a tough wah to top.

oh and if you're not into wahs with lots of switches and knobs and just want to step on it and use it the wylde wah gets my vote for the best stock out of the box 1 trick pony of the dunlops. i was real happy with that one the first time i stepped on it, it's got a nice deep growling voice. just a different inductor and range cap value is all it took to make the regular crybaby sound much more alive in the form of the wylde.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

I would just like one with true by-pass stock. I have never got around to modding mine with a true by-pass, but it needs it to stay in signal chain more.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

I have a basic Crybaby that's been with me for probably about 15 years... maybe a little more. Bone stock. Only thing I've ever done is move the pot into a better range... everyone plays it & goes "This is a Crybaby??!"

Always sounded great to me... even from the day I picked it over a Vox & a few others.

Last year I picked up an older Hendrix wah & really dig that too. Sounds a little fatter... not quite as upper mid heavy. And oddly enough sounds a bit different when bypassed then the crybaby which is amazing because the circuit boards are identical. There's 2, maybe 3 caps that are different values... but all the etchings, revision #'s; inductor etc. are identical.

Wah's are such fickle beasts... each one has a personality.

I haven't tried all the signature wahs & variations... they always vary even among the same model.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

I've had a few good wah's, but as far as Dunlop....

In the early/mid 90's, they made the Mr. Crybaby Super. It was a nicely voiced wah, which became a volume pedal in the off mode. Out of all the Dunlops, that one is the one I wish I had back.

And yes, I had a Budda and own a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe. All of them have their good points, but the Mr. Crybaby Super by Dunlop was a great wah pedal.

It almost makes me wonder why ALL wah pedals don't fall back as volume pedals in the off mode?

I've owned the 535Q and Dimebag sig. one and wasn't all that crazy about 'em (too much extended range with an unusable high end). I like wahs with that smoother top end to them. My old Pro Analog Supaquack had that (before it died) and from what clips I've heard, the KVR wah nails that. Is that what the Dunlop Hendrix wah does? That really fat, kinda smooth "Voodoo Chile" kinda sound is as good as it gets as far as I'm concerned.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

I have a Hendrix Dunlop that is pretty killer, but would be better if true bypass. I have the switch, one of these day I'll get aroud to modding it for T/B and an LED.....I have a spare Fasel I might stick in there too.....In the mean time I'm using a Fulltone I'm pretty happy with at the moment..............

Other than that I have a basic Dunlop (rev E) I modded with a Fasel, mid boost, vocal mod, LED, and true bypass. It serves me well when it's in my single chain.......

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

535Q.

i started with a hendrix wah which i found good for low rhythm stuff but lacked the brightness of the original crybaby; the 535Q does both and several in-between, has a controllable 20dB of boost/gain and an adjustable frequency filter control

what's not to like?!

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

The one I modded using DIY Guitarist mods and a red Fasel inductor. Real vocal sounding now.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

I thought I'd see more votes for the Crybaby Classic. I may have to check out the Slash, Wylde and the Hendrix.

I have an old Thomas Organ pedal that I like. I have the Classic but it is cleaner sounding than the old TO. The new VOX Clyde I have is good for funk rhythms (think "Shaft"), but is not quite full enough for rock.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

I only have one functioning wah - a Zakk Wylde wah. And I love it! Though I think I'd be happier with the Slash Wah.

sounds like you want a hendrix wah. they're good, but once i started using a switchable one i didn't go back
it'd suit your tunes too IMO, being bassier it's excellent for cleanish stuff but doesn't do that voxy disco thing

i find the 535Q does all of the above tho, so YMMV. i turn the gain down a lot, up the bandwidth and use a low setting tho

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

Only wah I've ever owned is the "Original Crybaby". It's just so warm and musical to me. I'd like to give those fasel inductor ones a shot though, or a Vox wah but that's really it.

All those sig ones are great for those artist's setups and what not but just seem useless to me. They have such a wide range I just think that the Original Crybaby is the only practical one for me to use. I've noodled around with all those wahs at Guitar Center and are cool dont get me wrong but I know that they would never work for me so I just stick to that 'ol Original Crybaby that I have to keep my amp cranked up for or else I can hear it squeak when I use it haha.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

Mine is an original crybaby from 1981- it was the only model they made back then. It sounds a lot different than the newer 'original crybaby's..more natural? just better?
i don't like the extended range of the more recent sig models or the morelys- it doesn't sound natural. my '81 just really has a good 'cry' to it.

If the wah has too much top end then pull back the teeth & rotate the pot so the travel is in a more usable range.

Super easy "mod" that's not really a mod...

Kinda like adjusting pickup polepieces.

The Hendrix wah, at least the old model that I have has the EXACT SAME circuit board as a regular old Crybaby, with 3 different resistors... not caps like I said previously. Caps are identical... just 3 changed resistors & a higher price.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

I used to have the regular old Crybaby and it worked for me for the most part. I find Dunlops clunky and rather archaic. I prefer a switchless design.

Re: What's Your Favorite DUNLOP Crybaby????

I had the standard Crybaby a while back and it suited me very well. I wouldn't be upset if that were my only wah. I can't remember why I got rid of it.

More recently, I had the Hendrix, which I never liked much. I gutted that and turned it into my current BYOC wah, which I really enjoy.
