didnt randy rhoads play a custom? and then when zakk joined ozzy... he put a bullseye on his creme custom so he didnt look like a randy rhoads imposter.

I gotta say, I like the LP Florentines, with the F-Holes, or the LP Lites from the 80s which were lots thinner. Great guitars, both.

I grew up playing a black Standard... great guitar, never should have sold it. I have been looking an off-white Randy Rhoads Custom with no luck. I voted for CUstom.

Having owned Standards, Customs, Classics, Studios, and a Lite, I'd say I prefer Standards. The Custom feels equal, but is a bit less 'woody' sounding. It's articulate, but a little more blunt sounding. The Classic plays fast, but has less depth. The Studio is similar to the Standard, but doesn't play or sound as refined as a Standard. The rest are stepping stones to the good ones. Just my 4 cents.

I love my '70 LP Standard I bought when I was in high school. It's the best sounding best playing LP I've ever touched. My player friends are always bugging me to borrow it for their sessions - they love the sound of it, too! It's not the prettiest - it has a plain maple top, no fancy grain, but it sounds so good!

I've only spent quality time with a standard so it gets my vote. I do like the looks of a black custom w/ nickel hardware though.

I really like the Classic.. You should have stuck that up as an option.. I love the classic with the 60's neck.. Actually, I would love to get a Custom with a 60's neck, but it's not made as far as I know.. I'm thinking about actually trying to build a LP type guitar so I can get the features I want.. which is something I can't seem to find.. Someone needs to make a Custom like guitar with the binding, etc, with an Ebony board, but with a thin neck.. and choice of pickups, etc.. Scale length, etc..

I'm partial to Customs, though I have seen and played my fair share of Standards in my day. Truth to tell, I'm really an SG man, but they don't hold up to the abuse I put them through. There's a reason my SGs are retired!

The 57 Reissue Black Custom may be what you want then. 57 Goldtop Std's have a big chunky neck, but the 57 Custom has a neck that's in between a 59 profile and a Classic. It's a really fast and really comfy neck. The only difference between a regular black custom and a 57 BB Custom is that the 57 has an all mahogany body and the neck is a touch slimmer than a 59 Std.

What about Classic? Not that I am particularly fond of them, but who out there likes them?

Also, why the hell are they cheaper than standards? They are usually 300-600 less than an equivelent standard. they have the same woods, same basic design. As far as I can tell a classic has a thinner neck, "aged" inlays, and different pickups and that's it.

Standard in my book is not only the standard for solid bodies, but a prime example of what a guitar at its finest is like.

havent played that many LP's but i vote for the custom. it has the nicest neck of all the ones i played (classic and standard)
