What's your favourite mic for your amp....

Re: What's your favourite mic for your amp....

I like the Sennheiser E609- used to use the old Shure SM57, but I really like the sound of the E609- pretty transparent, but if you like a little mid range peak- use the SM57. If you really crank your amp, try looking at a mic with a large diaphragm.

I like the Shure SM57 but maybe just because I'm so used to it's sound that it's now what I hear in my head when I think of miked amp tone. Lew

Are you permitted by law to use anything other than an sm57?:laugh2: yes......actually 2.......one in the center and one at the edge of the cone, right?

Re: What's your favourite mic for your amp....

I use both the Shure SM57 and the Sennheisser E609. The 57 reacts well to the mid range girth the Marshall is so good at providing.

There are a few mics that I really like:

AKG or Neuman lipstick mics, SM57, AKG414, BLUE The Ball

SM57... there's a reason why it's the mic by which all others are judged.

But it's still a helluva coloured sounding mic!
I don't mind the '57 when it's blended with another mic, tho

old tubed neumann......to fragile.....and too valuable for road use....but perhaps the ultimate recording mike

I like the SM57 the best but I've also been using the SM58 with pleasing results.

True, it is pretty colored... but I find it's mid quality to agree quite well with my style of music, and it add's a great bit of clarity to detuned guitars. As an exclusive 7-string player, that's very important to me.

I dig Nueman TLM193's, too, and two 57's like this: |\, one on axis, cone centered, and the other 45" angle to the cone.

Also, Audix i5's are very similar to 57's, but a bit more open.

For recording purposes I like the Blue Baby Bottle, AKG414, Rode NT2, the occasional SM57 (when mixed with something else) and also Sennheiser 421's.

For live, most PA companies I've ever worked with have provided 57s for onstage sound, so I haven't had an option in that respect.
