What's your most hated PUP

Re: What's your most hated PUP

What the heck is a "lipstick-tube Invader"?

Invader in a lipstick-tube form factor, complete with chrome. MJ made it for me one time when Seymour was on vacation. Don't let the fact that I'm making this up dissuade you from considering the possibilities.

Re: What's your most hated PUP

Bear in mind that I am a pedestrian guitarist on the best of days and have never owned anything really high end but here goes.

Stock pickups in ESP/LTD guitars. They somehow manage to capture a perfect storm of shrill, harsh, dull and muddy. I dunno how they do it, but they do. I just finished re-working a Jackson with a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge that was thoroughly disappointing to me, it has all the qualities that people hate in the JB in spades, but I like the JB in another guitar. According to what I was told in another thread where I mentioned that the other day the TZ needs some height tweaking to sound good, but it was so disappointing that I'll probably use the same amount of time to just replace it.

Re: What's your most hated PUP

Ibanez powersounds and the old non logo stuff of the late 80s

Fender ceramic singles

I've had a few epiphones where the wax buckers were actually fantastic ,but usually between wood, finish, and those pickups, dull muddy mess ensues.

But there's a bunch of cheap pickups that are subpar, just bad designs.

As for "hated"...A pickup can be high quality and you can still hate the tone. My vote for Duncan goes to Custom 5 and Jazz. I've had them in a bunch of guitars and they got ripped out of every single one. Full Shred is runner up.

PRS would be the HFS, and despite the vintage PRS love, I thought the original T&B pickups were awful.

Gibson- Dirty Fingers. Originals. Only new one I have tried was the DF+ (a2 mags) and it was pretty good.

496R. I can get into the 500, and the middle position with that set is good, but as a neck pickup only, hate it.

DiMarzio- Super 2, DeActivators and Tone Zone. Area singles. The AREAs really sound like some kind of fake modelled pickup.

EMG 81. Squish.

I don't like the Jazz either. What's your beef with the jazz?

Re: What's your most hated PUP

I have a very mid-heavy poplar bodied guitar. The Jazz works really well in that, but I don't like the EQ in most other guitars.

What Mincer said, though I would be less polite.Shrieky and Sterile sre the buzzwords I would use.

I actually really liked the Duncan Designed Jazz I had in old Hamer XT. It was more full and a bit warmer- halfway between an alnico 2 pro and a Jazz

Re: What's your most hated PUP

Sorry I've got to say that I do not agree :)

I got the HS3, they're very low output but they keep the shred clean ;)

And the PAF Pro is golden at the neck! They aren't very high output either, but obviously that just means you have to overdrive them more if you want high gain. The nice thing is that they stay clear even when cranked.

And I love the HS-3 too for the same reason. I like them slightly more than Duncan's YJMs.

Re: What's your most hated PUP

I like the PAF Pro too, personally. I particularly like it in the bridge position of basswood guitars.

Thing about the PAF Pro is it's REALLY bright and edgy. It has got to be one of the brightest humbuckers I've tried. For me, that brightness makes it a picky pickup to match in the neck position. I personally don't like the common Tone Zone/PAF Pro combo at all. Hell, I thought the PAF Pro in the neck was way too bright for the Dominion in my RG570, even. JMO.

Oh, and about the EMG 85, I hate it as a neck pickup too, especially when paired with an 81 in the bridge, but as a bridge pickup, I think it's brilliant.

Utterly pointless, really, aside from showing how different each individual's tastes really are. One man's EMG is another man's PAF, 'nuff said ;)

Re: What's your most hated PUP

Never played a guitar with EMGs that I liked.

Never played a Fender guitar with Lace Sensors that I liked.

I HATE the Gibson 490R/498T pair because they don't go together well. Of the two, I prefer the 490R; I can work with it, but the 498T is a bit too aggressive for my style.

My Les Paul 1960 Classics came with the 496R/500T pickups. I actually liked their tone, but with the Mesa amps they were just way too hot. I swapped for Antiquitys in one guitar and and Custom Shop 50th Anniversary A2 Seths in the other guitar. Very happy with my choice. I could see using the Gibson Hot Ceramics with a lower gain amp like a BF or SF Fender, or a Marshall Plexi, JMP or JCM 800 where you want to push the amp.

Most Epi pickups do nothing for me, but I love the Ibanez Super 58s in my Artstar AS-120. That was why I chose the Ibanez over an Epi Sheraton II.

I'm not a fan of Fender Texas Specials, as they seem harsh and edgy to me.

When I bought my first G&L Comanche I had some difficulties getting good tones. These are such great guitars, but the Z-Coil pickups are a little quirky. It took a while but I figured it out, and I love the tones I get now. Really versatile.

That's all I can think of, at the moment.

I can understand your sentiment. (or sentinel)
But deep in your heart, you can’t resist reading every posts in this thread because it is so interesting to hear from your fellow tone junkies.

Re: What's your most hated PUP

(all bridge & neck)
BurstBucker pro (my fav' for metal, jazz & blues, the most versatile & organic).
EMG H3/H4 (disapointing)
Duncan Slash (too much output for me)
HS3 (shred machine coz' of the low output)
Harley Benton (most unexpensive guitar from the video)
Wilkinson MWCHB Alnico (neither I like them or hate them)
EMG 81/60 ( I mounted them uncorrectly so they sounded horrible)
Lundgren M8P (the most pro pups I have).

Very hi-gain. Monitoring or HD headphones needed, unless this video is null and void lol

Blackouts vs EMG : follow my signature below.

Also depends on the guitar. What sounds great on one guitar might sound awful on another. I've had that happen several times.
