What's your second favorite knob after volume?

Did a recent ornamental gig, where I needed to leave a lot of white space and got in the mood to just play my reverend double agent's neck p90 for a long while-

The reason was simple- Backing off volume gave me a nearly clean sound and rolling off the bass gave an almost perfect straty neck tone for rhythem. Spin the bass back up and clean p90 returned and then up with the vol for more crunch.

So to answer my own question-
  • on a heavy sustaining guitar, a bass roll off is superb.
  • On a strat, a blender is a fine control.
  • And on single sized rails, I'll pick a spin a split-
What about you guys?

On the amp either bass, or master volume amps, gain.

Why use a volume knob to loose mojo when you could use a gain knob to boost it?

Treble bleeds can do interesting things to a volume knob.

Demoniac nailed it for me... My Rev has a wonderful treble bleed... In this case I had the preamp maxed and master relatively low... So when I backed off the vol, the amp cleaned up nicely and retained high end.

Volume is my second favourite knob.

I use YJM Speed Pots for tone, too. I probably use them as much as volume- I like how they can produce a nice wah sound.

Re: What's your second favorite knob after volume?

I dont like anything but a volume knob and I almost just want an on/off switch, however I do get some versatility by rolling it down depending on the song, so if it werent for losing that really awesome feature I would.

Not a knob, but exp. pedal hooked on EHX Worm for a treble boost.

Re: What's your second favorite knob after volume?

I prefer volume-only without a treble-bleed. I actually don't mind a tone-pot with actives, but using passives that are high-output and at least somewhat "modern" voiced for quick lows and crisp highs I've found that rolling back the volume just a little cuts those ultra-highs and sort-of thickens the midrange, or maybe it just creates the perception of thickening, which is fine too.

I've always wanted to try an emg spc but they jacked the price on them in recent years using the quick-connect plug as their reason,,,,,,,like it really cost more than a few$ for the quick-plug.

Thanks Mincer, will have to give them a try...

So it's a standard spec pot, but hyper lubed? Imaging the wah effect isn't due to throw or whiper variations, but simply because the pot turns so easily?

Yeah, you got it. It makes it easy to sweep. I learned this from watching Steve Morse.

Jeremy, you nailed it- when I play a bridge only guitar, I end up using the tone control like I would normally use a 5 way-

Haven't done it yet, but have considered replacing the tone with a 5 way and trim pots to hit the sweet spots- but that's probably me overthinking;)

Re: What's your second favorite knob after volume?

i like tuning the pot value & taper and cap value to the guitar in question to give me a wide range of musical, usable tones. it takes a little time and effort but if you are a player that uses the controls then you can glean a good amount of value from the work

The NECK volume on a Les Paul.

Set it to 0 for a quick on/off toggle
Set it to just above barely "on" for an instant mega distort to clean switch
