What's your second favorite knob after volume?

Re: What's your second favorite knob after volume?

i like tuning the pot value & taper and cap value to the guitar in question to give me a wide range of musical, usable tones. it takes a little time and effort but if you are a player that uses the controls then you can glean a good amount of value from the work

Great mind Jeremy:)

Unless it's a very common build, I usually run alligator clips out of the cavity and clip in tone caps to find the ones that like that particular guitar and it varies a lot more often than I would otherwise imagine...

The NECK volume on a Les Paul.

Set it to 0 for a quick on/off toggle
Set it to just above barely "on" for an instant mega distort to clean switch

I like your thinking- Good one- I once put a trim pot on a switch for a client to dial in exactly that sound...

Re: What's your second favorite knob after volume?

Jeremy, you nailed it- when I play a bridge only guitar, I end up using the tone control like I would normally use a 5 way-

Haven't done it yet, but have considered replacing the tone with a 5 way and trim pots to hit the sweet spots- but that's probably me overthinking;)

Not too odd, I have a single pickup Tele and wired the switch 1-Vol only, 2-Vol and Tone (with a .047 cap), 3-Vol only with a hardwired. 0047 cap for a more "cocked wah" sound (the Eldred mod). I usually use position 2 where I present the tone knob based on the amp and room and use that as my Rhythm tone, position one for a bright lead and position 3 in place of the neck pickup for leads.

I don't know about you guys, but all the saucy girls I get from being middle aged bluesman really appreciate my knob...

By that I mean they like my pickup switch that I use to go from fiery rock and roll to romantic power balads.

I like the way you think!

This. I use it all the time on the neck pup. And I like to roll off the treble halfway on the bridge.
Yeah that's a great circuit!

On most guitars I do a lot of pup shifts almost always when moving from rhythm to lead and back... Otherwise my beefy mid sounds create inarticulate, muddy rhythms.

But with a bass roll off, I tend to switch less, rolling off bass for rhythm and rolling in bass to thicken for leads.

Of course these approaches are rather different, but provide a lot of flexibility...

And I spin the rolloff so much that I really like the upper bout placement on a reverend... Not close to other controls so I can spin it with flat of hand without hitting other controls...

Sounds like that knob is spit shined and well polished on the regular.

Blend or blank

Too many knobs is a pita and just additional signal loss
