What's your "secret weapon" pedal

I am in the process of compiling my basic effect pedal collection. Here's where I'm at:

Dunlop Crybaby, Ibanez Reissue Tube Screamer, Ibanez Phaser (old orage one), DOD Ice Box Chorus, EH Deluxe Memory Man and TU-2 Boss tuner.

I play through a JCM 900 50 watt head.

I know this is a pretty basic collection of effects. I was just wondering what you guys have as a "secret weapon" pedal. Something that you stomp on when you need that extra something. Just wondering.

Rock on.

Right now it's a Dallas Rangemaster clone. There's another one that I use from time to time. Just a simple booster based off the front-end of the Marshall JCM 800's. I like the Wylde OD and SD-1 too but I'm preferring boosters for that little extra instead of overdrives.

The Boss DS-1.

I don't use pedals much but I think the DS-1 is the greatest guitar pedal ever created...especially the original MIJ version like I have.

I keep the distortion set very low, the tone at less than half and the level where ever it needs to be depending on the guitar pickups.

If I'm using a DS-1 I leave it ON all the time. I never use it as a stomp on or stomp off distortion pedal.

It's like a rock tone conditioner and allows me to roll the volume down to half on my guitar and get a great sparkling clean tone or turn it up a little and get a great slightly overdriven rythym tone or crank the volume on the guitar to full for a great and very natural overdriven tone.

So much more transparant and natural and useful than a Tubescreamer...

Can't be beat, IMO, and you can buy 'em new for so cheap!

My secret weapon will always be the greatest clean boost/OD ever made....the Klon Centaur. I'll show you the different ones. Bill Finnegan only makes one pedal, and his whole career is based on the fact that he outdid everyone else with his design. The gold one with Centaur pic (the one I have) is the first version and most collectible, although all of them have an identical circuit. For some reason he kept making it look cheaper, which confuses most Klon fans.

I'm sorry to say I've never tried one! :smack: I'd love to though.

How does it compare to the DS-1? Other than costing ALOT MORE! :laugh2:

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

ive owned alot of pedals but ive never played one that i would call my 'secret weapon'. i like the distorted sound from my amp above all. i use my wah and super chorus to get whacked-out sounds.

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Its not much of a secret, but a key component in my sound is a Digitech Whammy. Used sparingly, this is a great tool to get different sounds. It adds what I like to think as a "surprise effect".

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Digitech Bad Monkey for single coils, Carl Martin Plexitone for humbuckers and some single coils.

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

I got one., I think its called the marshall footswitch pedal or something :laugh2:

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Mine is the Danelectro Fabtone.

Mine has been modded with quieter op-amps (LM833's). I dropped the gain by changing out a resistor or two. I also sweetened the distortion by changing one of the diodes to a germanium. I'm thinking really hard about changing the other to a germanium. Much softer clipping on one side of the waveform. It went from being a harsh distortion only pedal that only increased in saturation with increased gain to an overdrive/distortion pedal. Much more flexible. It has dynamics just like a good OD pedal should, so you can vary your picking strength to accentuate certain notes. Makes playing distorted parts much more expressive that way. When the gain on the pedal is cranked, you lose some of the expressiveness, but you get a nice tubey distortion that has a lot of character. You don't lose note definition with the pedal cranked really. The notes tend to get sorted back out when they hit power tube distortion and they stand well on their own. It's a fantastic pedal to run through the Sovtek. The amount of sizzle it has is astounding. Truly a gem in the rough if you know how to polish it. If you run it as a boost/EQ only with little to no gain, it will flat out hammer your input and it's super quiet. At max gain, there's a little noise, but not much at all and the distortion is gorgeous. I can't wait to run this through the Edana.

My secret weapon is the good old classic armadillo most yankees call a V-Twin ;)

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

the line6 DL4. I never do a show without some looping device, and this is a great choice. not just delay, but overdrive, chorus and seasick spaceship sounds too. fun when i see people with that look of 'what the hell was *that*'

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

I don't use any pedals right now...I really want a Maxon OD808 though. And even if I DID have a secret weapon pedal, I wouldn't tell you. I mean come on, its a SECRET weapon...need I say more?

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

I'd say that the L6 blue modulation pedal would be a great 'secret weapon' for it's ability to clone most of the 60's/70's modulation effects. I keep mine on my board, rather than using separate analog FX. If I want an effect on a part, I just turn the dial until something fits the vibe I'm after. It's hard to beat Line 6 pedals for versatility. For OD's, it's gotta be analog though.

Maxon OD808 as a clean boost.
