When buying used: How can you SEE the difference between Keeley and Stock TS-9?

Any idea?

I'm buying one tomorrow and I'd rather not pay $90 (the price of a new original) for something used that someone spent $2 and 30 minutes modding. If it is the real Keeley mod, I can justify spending the extra cash, although I'm not sure why that is.

Anyway! Anyone know how I can visually see the difference? Any marks or anything?

If the mod was done by Keeley, there will be a blue Keeley sticker on it. I'm not sure if they change the LED or not, but that can tell you. If all else fails, open it up and look at the op-amp, it should have 4558D JRC written on it.

Mmm... None of those things are definitive. :-\

I'll look for the sticker, though, as that is the easiest one to tell if it was reused or not.

It's not hard to replace an LED or get a 4558D JRC chip.

Thats pretty much the mod. I think they change a resistor too.
The jrc chip is the dead give away. If it's in there it's been modded.

Well... I know it's been modded. I just want to know if it was done by Keeley or not.

Look for the blue sticker near the power jack.

If it's been modded with the correct chip, what difference does it make who did the mod?

It either sounds good or doesn't, right?

As I said above, I have no idea why I care, but for some reason I do.


It just seems odd to pay full price ($30 more than a normal used pedal) for something I could do for $2 and 30 minutes of my time.

Then buy an unmodified pedal cheap, and do the mod yourself.

Yep. Chips are easy to remove. The Keeley style mod is pretty easy to do. That could be why I don't want to pay the new price for a used modded pedal. But I know how to get a lower price now.

Speaking of op-amps... Does this hold any water?



I would think this is correct except with regard to noise. All the clipping in the clipping circuit comes from the diodes, right? The op-amp isn't doing any clipping, so as long as it's in its designated linear region, the op-amp shouldn't matter, again, except for noise. Is this correct theoretically? Does it hold up in practice?

Well.....you can get it to clip....but most of them won't sound too good unless you tweak some more!
Anyways cheap op-amps do sound worse.....
And regardless of what they claim(in those tests that I think sucks beyond words) there is a difference!

how do you know keeley did the keeley mod?????
