Re: When did this American Strat made in?

I think it's pretty hard to determine fret wear without a close inspection.

the picture doesn't show any flattening out of the frets, but that's usually worst down in the first few frets

Re: When did this American Strat made in?

What Curly said. If you can't see the guitar personally and are concerned about fret wear, then get pictures with the strings off of the frets 1 thru 5. If you see any grooves then you'll know neck may need a fret dress.

BTW, an American Standard Neck should have 22 frets.

Re: When did this American Strat made in?

And I'm not positive about '99, but more recently the American Series (in '99 I suppose it was the American Standard Series...) hasn't offered that color. Do you have a shot of the headstock?

Or, even better, try contacting Fender with the Serial # (I don't THINK they have a serial tracker on their site, but I could be wrong) and they tell you exactly what model it is and when it was made.

According to Fender N9+5 digits is 1990.

But here...I found a closer shot of that neck for us to check the frets on:

From your link:

With 1990 came the introduction of the "N" prefix serial numbers, which stood for the 1990s. The numbers and decals are produced far in advance, and apparently, some N9 decals, (which were supposed to be used in 1999), were affixed to some instruments in 1990. As a result, you will see some 1990 guitars bearing N9 serial numbers.

also, as pointed out, it's got 21 frets, so what model is it?

I think we'd need a pic of the headstock to tell.

If he's selling he's going to say it's older...

If he's buying the seller's going to tell him it's older...

No headstock pic is going to change the amount of spin involved in getting more money out of the deal.

Re: When did this American Strat made in?

the point was to establish the provenance, not the value

as quoted (from your link), even Fender's "official" info is ambiguous, so a pic of the headstock - and any other identifying marks - would help :)

Re: When did this American Strat made in?

That's not an American Std. Tapered vintage neck? It looks like a Japanese standard. It's got an 11 hole pickguard, vintage strap button, and that neck looks like an inexpensive vintage type. The guy is F.O.S.

Re: When did this American Strat made in?

fender makes an american '62 reissue that comes with 21 frets

True. It's possible it's one of those, but then the serial number, pickguard, and pickups aren't quite right either. Need more pics!

Re: When did this American Strat made in?

according to fender.com, if that is an amercian standard strat, and you can tell because it will say "made in usa" on the headstock under the logo, then its either a 1990 or a 1999. I have a 1999 american standard and judging by your neck and from the hardware that is visible from the picture, yours is a 1990. It could also be a '93-'94 Japanese made strat. You can tell if its made in japan by looking for the "made in japan" words on the back of the neck right at the joint where the neck meets the body.

Re: When did this American Strat made in?

yeah you definitely have an american standard strat. I'm guessin that it is a 1990 model, based on the hardware.
