at 13 after being hit with AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Hendrix and VH all around the same time.

I started when I was a freshman in high school. I somehow got accepted into a jazz program that wasn't supposed to accept freshmen (I had played saxophone throughout middle school - started out on alto and went to tenor). Long story short, I wasn't the fore runner of the class (it was an advanced jazz class for more experienced and older players) and in between performance times they had tons of beat up acoustics in the music room and I picked it up and started learning songs (Nirvana riffs, Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild", Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters", various Red Hot Chili Peppers etc.).

13. I had been learning drums on my own home-grown drum kit and my Mom thought she'd get me off those noisy contraptions by giving me a nylon string guitar for Christmas. She thought I'd be all Segovia-like.

Boy, did I fool her - almost immediately I started electrifying my acoustic by sticking tape-recorder microphones in the soundhole. By the next October, I'd bought myself my first electric; a no-name Japanese thing that cost me $22.50.

Re: When did you pick up your first Mighty Axe???

If I started at 4 and a half or 14 and a half... Is a fairly good question. I got my first guitar from my grand parents in the awesome Christmas of 1990. It was a really cheap acoustic guitar, with the strings almost a centimeter away from the neck at the 12th fret. Almost instantly I started fretting notes as far up as possible, as it in my ears sounded like Clapton's round soloing tone. I'd also put playing cards or sandwich paper in between the strings and strum them. It sounded like a quite horrible fuzz box. I'd repeat this every now and then for a few years, but due to a horrible music teacher in preliminary school, nothing more happened. During this period, I listened mostly to Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Queen.

That is, until I turned 14 and a half. A few years earlier, some of my best friends at the time had turned me onto Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Pantera, The Offspring, Green Day and Rage Against The Machine. I became obsessed. After almost half a year of lobbying from my friends, and music classes, I finally decided to put my above-shoulders face out of my below-shoulders face, and started taking lessons. Which was a really good thing for me. Suddenly, I also became a social being. With self confidence. Then I heard progressive metal. And died. :joke:

Through progressive metal as well as the bands afore mentioned, I discovered a million other genres, such as jazz, death metal and of course jazzy progressive death metal.

Anyway, I guess the real answer is 14. :P

9, I had to play guitar after being shown Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" music video.

I also noticed that girls like guitar players. :naughty:

I was 14 when I first picked up an acoustic, I saved for the longest time to get an electric after that

I realize I'm in the vast minority here but I started at 38.....I grew up playing drums and always put it off....

Now that I struggle to find time for the woodshed I really wish I would've started when I had more time...I'm jealous of the majority of you who started as kids...but I'm totally hooked and workin hard!

I started guitar when I was 16 or so, and I just got a drum set a few weeks ago....I can relate :friday:

Re: When did you pick up your first Mighty Axe???

first time i have ever picked up a guitar was at around 10, was a classical guitar that belonged to my sister but after trying to learn by myself for a couple of weeks i gave up when someone told me i sucked lol didnt touch a guitar until i was 17. I would listen to other genres of music wich i cant stand today and will not mention so i don't get banned by EX-250 lol but at 17 was when one of my freinds poped an old tape on and i heard the song that turned my whole life around and made me pick up a guitar once more... Paranoid, i swear that was the coolest thing ever back then for me and i HAD to learn that song.. after 2 weeks or so i had learned it and i started to listen to every single ozzy era black sabbath songs and learning them one by one until i started paying attention to other classic bands like led zeppelin, deep purple, jthro thull, Hendrix, VH etc... eventualy i went into more metal music like megadeth and pantera and explored other genres too but to me those we're completly unknown until i heard paranoid and picked up a guitar for the first time and was stuborn and dedicated enough to ignore everyone else and just play the stoner rock i wanted to play lol :headbang:

Re: When did you pick up your first Mighty Axe???

I received an nylon acoustic guitar for christmas when I was 11, but I kinda dropped the guitar because of my guitar teacher. Tho I was playing once in a while some poor stuff, but I really took the guitar back up at 14 and I've never stop since then.
