When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

I would like to see a check box beside each pickup & then a "Compare" button at the bottom to filter out hte ones you don't
want to see.

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

It's simple -- add everything to the chart that Seymour makes that isn't there now. But if you need some particulars:

Custom 5 (as others have said)
Twangbanger
Five-Two
Phat Cat
Antiquities

That said, there are other pages at the site that give you the lowdown on the specs for all these pickups, but it would be nice to see them all on the Tone Chart page together.

The EQ bars are pretty cool as is, but it would be great if the mids could be broken up into upper and lower...

This doesn't make any sense....by using the SAME amp for the crunch then the SAME amp for cleans it takes the amp's sound out of the equation more than any other method....

I don't see how the Marshall JCM 800 in a good Marshall cab and a Fender Super Reverb aren't high quality amps??

If you start using different gain levels for the clips that makes it harder to tell the changes from pickup to pickup because you are incorporating OTHER changes into the sound.

There is too much gain in those clips. All I hear is gain and not the pickup. I don't have a problem with using the same amp to keep consistant. Just use more than one type of gain level for each clip; a low, medium and high gain clip for each of the pickups would do exactly what you claim you want it to do. It would also show how a pickup reacts to different gain levels.

Okay, I got you now. If they used 3 different gain levels to display the distorted side of each pickup then that could be a good thing IMO.

I dont' know how much it would add but it sure wouldn't hurt.

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

Thanks to everyone for your comments. We'll take those into consideration when we re-do the tone chart in the next month or so.

Keep in mind that the EQ specs are totally subjective. A few of us got together and "voted" on the curve. Same with the output bars. Those specs are not objective like d.c. resistance and resonant peak.

Also, using milivolts may look objective at first glance, but it's very problematic once you dig a little deeper.

The best way to know what a pickup is going to sound like before you hear it is to understand how d.c. resistance and resonant peak work together to determine the sound and output of the pickup, then look at the d.c. resistance and the resonant peak for each pickup, and then listen to it using the sound clips -- through good speakers, or else they're all sound the same.

Thanks again for the great comments.

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

I think the DC resistance, resonant peak specs and mentioning the type of magnet are great as is -- they really zero it in for me.

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

Evan, is there any way you fine folks at Seymour Duncan could add inductance to the chart?

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

i'd like to see comparisons - stuff like

59n <<bassier<< jazz(n) >>brighter>> full shred(n)

so you can start at pickup you already own and follow traits you're looking for :)

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

I'd like to see all the customs side-by-side, all the PAFish pickups side-by-side, and the jb and distortion by each other.
eq:
highs
upper mids
lower mids
bass
dc restance and the output being shown in bar and number form.

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

I'm glad this topic was brought up again. The tonechart is great and really helps, but it could be improved upon. I still like the seperate low/high mid idea and it would be great if the other pickups would be added.

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

One of the things that's going to help out a lot is the new product descriptions which will be incorporated into the next catalog and website. They'll be things like this:

SH-1 ’59 Model™

Application:
Versatile P.A.F.-type humbucker. Great for country, jazz, blues, funk, classic rock and heavy rock.
Description:
Late-‘50s, vintage-correct, humbucker sound. Warm and crystalline clean tones. Full and bright distorted tones. Smooth sustain. Classic appointments include plain enamel wire, long legged bottom plate, vintage single conductor cable and no logo. Compared to the SH-55 Seth Lover, the ’59 has slightly more scooped mids and is vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance.
Complete Setup:
Available for both neck and bridge positions. Often a ‘59 neck is used together with a hotter bridge pickup like the SH-4 JB or SH-13 Dimebucker for extra versatility.
Guitars:
For balanced and warm instruments. Works especially well with mahogany bodies and rosewood fingerboards.
Available Mods:
Four-conductor cable. Nickel or gold-plated cover. Trembucker. 7-string version. Seymour Duncan logo. Available in matched set of ’59 bridge and ’59 neck.
Players:
Jimmy Page (neck & bridge), Ben Harper (bridge), Robben Ford (neck & bridge), Mike Einzinger / Incubus (neck), Dimebag Darrell / Damageplan (neck).
USA MSRP:
$99

Hopefully, these new descriptions will be much more informative and will help you make the right pickup choice.

(bump, so others can read and possibly add what they would like to see on the tone chart) wow, thats a ****ing idea!!!

Re: When is seymour duncan going to update the specs chart?

We looked into that idea and had a few web-savvy code writers give us bids for the project. Sorry. Waaaay too expensive.

Evan, you're really onto something there! It looks wonderful! It gives the musician every bit of info they need to get a feel for whether or not the pickup will work for them. If you can do that with all of your pickups, that would be a dream come true :)

Dreams do come true. Stay tuned for the next catalog and web update. It'll be complete before the end of the Summer.
