"For ourselves"?

Who says some people/person already hasn't?

Several "have", but even they don't always agree on the results. I took note of your source's info and appreciate the input. Personally, I'm not arguing either way, because I find the whole thing rather unimportant in the larger scheme of things and I find the "smoke and mirrors" marketing enjoyable to a certain extent. If you want to know my formal opinion, PM me.

For the purpose of tone shaping with mag swaps, experienced users know that the JB, DD and Invader can be viewed as comparable platforms. There are many factors that can change the perceived "tone" after a swap, as well, from slight pickup height differences after re-install to the particular guitar the pickup is going into and even the material composition of the magnet used for the swap, which can change slightly from batch to batch, just as magnet wire does. Likewise, buying an A5 from AddictionFX and swapping it into a Distortion WILL result in a pickup that sounds ever-so-slightly different than a stock JB when compared directly, simply because the magnets aren't exactly the same compositionally.

Honestly, I think we've derailed the OP's topic long enough on this "same vs. different" discussion...what's the latest, GHWelles?

Its funny to me to read the different experiences. All anyone has to do is get a new SH-4, 6, and 8 from the same era, or order them all at once, and unwind one of each coil. It's not a trade secret that the coils are matched. Duncan has said in the past that their production humbucker coils are matched, I'm sure I've said it in posts while working there.

I still believe companies are entitled to trade secrets, and that they don't owe the answer to questions like these, but I also believe consumers can buy and analyze anything they want. If a guitar company wants to buy one of my guitars for $3000 and saw it in half, they can do it. They still won't know many of my secrets to why it sounds good. But if you took the time to peel off thousands of layers of wire, across three different wax potted bobbins, you'd deserve to know the answer.

To the OP, the JB2 or a JB4 should balance greatly with YJM's. Rock on.

I have never provided a source....other than just to refer to any such persons in the abstract.

Re: Where DD Magnet?

Never said you did, mr. sensitive ;)

Let's get this discussion back on topic...

Re: Where DD Magnet?

OK, I tried a single size ceramic mag in the JB and it sounded like a JB boosted with more treble. It still has a spikey thing that makes me cringe. A true DD has more saturation and fuller mids and no spike. The JB2 goes very well with the YJM neck so I am leaving it for now. I like the DD better but the JB2 has a nice A2 sound going

Re: Where DD Magnet?

I believe it was Evan or Frank that said the JB and Distortion are not the same wind. It was definitely someone from Seymour Duncan, I know that.

I'd have to look, but I believe it way Frank in a thread I started. I'm at work and the moment, though.

OK, Frank himself replied after I said I'd look... Thus negating my need to searches for my own thread. LOL

I already posted the link of the thread on the first page with Frank's response...

Yeah, that's why you've gotta have that thick ceramic. About 10-12 years ago a few guys really liked the custom with a thick ceramic mag.

Re: Where DD Magnet?

Ok, I've got the double thick ceramic from my SH-6n that I put an A4 in. I'm seriously considering putting them into the JB I have in the bridge of my Schecter Blackjack. I take it that it will get me close to a DD. However I do have a Custom that I'm thinking of putting into another strat I have. What does the Custom tend to sound like with a double thick ceramic in it?

Just now, I was wondering to myself, what would result if instead of using the plastic spacers with the double thick, what if instead I used a carbon steel spacer in the form of a concrete nail cut to size? Would this thicken the bass end? Or, instead, the treble? Just musing on a Friday night.
