Where should the ground connection be wired? Volume or tone pot?

I accidentally broke the ground wire in my HSS strat style. Any idea where I should resolder it to? Does it matter volume or tone pot or should I aim for something else. The other end is connected to the tremolo spring claw.

It "should" be on the tone. But, the back of a potentiometer was not designed to be a ground point.

Make sure you sand off the shiney from where you plan on soldering.

In all reality, it doesnt matter where you ground it. All grounds go to the same place. Both the volume and tone pots are linked together ground wise.

The tone pot looks pretty smooth, no soldering residue, while the volume pot is too far away from the end of the wire. Maybe it was connected to the selector switch?

You could do that too. You could also put a lug, somewhere away from the back of the pots.

Like it was said before. It really doesn't matter where it's grounded, as long as it's grounded. You can't have an AC signal without a -.

If it is a mono jack with 1 hot/1 ground (if it is passive, you should have this), ground is common. It doesn't matter where the ground from the jack goes specifically, as long as everything that is supposed to be grounded is connected somehow to that common ground.

Sanding is really unnecessary, especially if it's a cts pot. there could be flux on the back which is there to help the solder stick. All sanding would do is remove that. Even so as long as the iron is good and tinned, there should be no problem getting the solder to stick.

As to where to solder the ground, doesn't matter as long as everything gets grounded.
