Where to Order Shop Floor Custom?

just got a very similar response from squid music. bit of a bummer to be honest. hopefully a different store can help me out, although if this is a new duncan policy that would be less than ideal for me.

I don't think this is a new policy, rather it is a policy of some stores to push you into buying existing stock.

Bumping this to see if anyone has any new info about ordering Shop Floor Customs and what they will and won't do.

You can order them from any authorized Seymour Duncan dealer. Check out here for what is covered under this program.

1. Logo/no logo. Includes mini humbuckers
2. Bobbin color. For standard-spaced humbuckers only. You can choose from any combination (except Double Crème) or single color from the following: Black, White, Crème, Red, Dark Blue, Light Blue, Pink, Yellow, Green.
3. Covers. Where applicable, a cover may be added to pickups or the color of the cover can be changed. Options are Nickel, Chrome, Gold, Black Nickel, Black Chrome, and Powder coated Black. For calibrated sets of Stratocaster pickups, cover colors can be changed.
4. Lead wire. You can elect to change a 4-conductor cable to single conductor cable and vise versa on full size and mini humbuckers only.
5. Bottom plate. On standard spaced humbuckers you can choose long or short legs. Or you can choose a black bottom plate.
6. Wind/polarity. You can choose reverse-wound/reverse-polarity (Rw/Rp) or other on applicable models. For instance, STR-1 Rw/R or OEM 59 RP.
7. Magnet Stagger. Flat/Staggered and Lefty Staggered options on Strat and Tele models where applicable.
8. Pole Pieces. You can choose between Gold, Nickel or Black poles and Studs, or White, Black or Gold cap screws for Invaders.
9. Loaded Pickguard Colors. These come stock in White but Black is an option too!
10. Wax Potting. You can order wax potted Seth Lovers to eliminate microphonics.
11. Single coil bottom plates. Oval vs. V bottom plates for single coils.
12. Single coil spacing. You can order narrow spacing Strat pickups for PT Cort.

So you can't get any classic Seymour Duncan like a 59, Invader, JB or Distortion in the matte black bobbins with the black nickel screws/slugs to get the same look as a Nazgul, Pegasus or Sentient? Seems like that SHOULD be a Shop Floor Custom item, especially since the 7 or 8 string versions of some pickups like the Distortion have the matte black and black nickel pole pieces.

Also how are there some sellers (authorized dealers?) on different places (eBay or Reverb) with Blackened Black Winters, and on rare occassions I've seen a few "Blackened" pickups maybe a Distortion or Nazgul?

Found this on the Introducing the Rails Series thread.

Shop floor customs.webp

Is this still possible?

Go to an Authorized Dealer and ask. I like the matte black bobbins, too. And there have been special runs of them. But my guess is that if you want something not mentioned on the list above, just order it through the Custom Shop.

Yeah I'm not paying for a full custom shop just for matte bobbins. I asked earlier this year and posted in this thread and the Squid Music shop online told me I needed to order 5 SETS in order to do custom color like matte bobbins. Not 5 pickups, but 5 SETS. The post I linked to from last year made it seem like it was possible. Something changed between then and now it seems.

I swear I remember I once saw on eBay someone selling a factory Custom 8 in a production level plastic box. So at some point, I think they were willing to do magnet swaps as Custom Floor orders. At least on some models.

Ordering a custom pickup is cheaper than 5 sets. But contact an authorized dealer and see what they say is available with the Shop Floor Custom program.

Well, being an authorized dealer comes with responsibilities. They might be required contractually to do floor shop orders (without putting obstacles). If you are so inclined you could complain to SD about a specific dealer and see what happens.

I emailed SD about Shop Floor Customs. They said Squid Music, Smokey B’s, JMI Music, and Sweetwater were shops that ‘specialize’ in ordering shop floor customs.

Always good bets. But really, any authorized dealer should be able to do it for you.
