Is it a bad idea to have random magnets milling about on a guitar with magnetic pickups?

My sentiment on reading as well- Velcro sounds safer.

I don't think there would be an issue of having small magnets to keep the cover on. I'd say all you need to do is slightly recess the cover so it doesn't go sliding around all willy nilly and then use magnets strong enough to hold it in place but so strong as to make it difficult.

The magnets on the back of a Strat would have less interference than the middle pickups magnets interfering with the neck and bridge.

It’s interesting to me how many people here make the conscious decision to allow dirt, dust, etc. to have access to the trem mechanisms due to what can only be laziness but hide behind saying it’s not necessary.

I mean, c’mon guys. I can see leaving it off while you’re making adjustments for a different gauge of strings or something, but otherwise a trem is a set-and-forget kind of thing... there’s no NEED to remove the cover once you have the trem set up. Why allow “stuff” to have unnecessary access to it?

You’re aware there’s a huge hole in the top of the guitar, right? Any wear on my Strat’s bridge (and all the others I’ve seen) is on top from my hand rubbing and sweating on it.

Besides... they look dumb

Someone could argue you're going to have much easier time keeping it clean without the cover. Just blow or wipe it off every now and then and that's it.

With cover on, it's much more likely you're passing it on until you have time... some day...

It's going to gather some dust anyway overtime.

I don't think they'd be anywhere close to proximity nor strong enough to affect anything. Lots of high end basses use magnets for the control cavity, too.

On my custom-made Stinnett guitar, the trem-cover that was made out of the same piece of wood as the body is still on the guitar.
On every other guitar that came with a plastic trem-cover, it's in my drawer...
