Silly quesiton but... if I want to use a 250K pot with a JB, do I have to change both the volume and tone pots or just the volume pot is OK? Which pot influence the tone of the pickup?

I'm using a LP type guitar by the way.

Thanks.

You might want to start with just one and if you feel you need the JB to be warmer than do both. I'd start with the tone control if it was me...a 250K tone pot will take some edge off. Then do the volume control too if you feel the need. I like CTS pots. Lew

Maybe you should go with a 250k volume and a 500k tone. The 250k volume will add a bit of warmth to it, but it won't be too warm. I've heard that a lot of players, especially jazz players, like the 250k volume pots because it gives a smoother taper or more gradual change in volume response. That's just my take. If that doesn't seem like your thing, then use a 500k volume and a 250k tone.

Thank you guys... I have a 250K pot laying around. I'll start with the tone pot and see how it sounds... actually, I'll do the switch only if I don't like it with a 500K pot. I've tried a JB a while back, but it was not with my Traynor YCV50 amp. Maybe I'll like it as is. I'll keep you posted...

You don't need to install a 250k tone pot to "see" how it sounds. Take your present tone control and turn it down to about 7. Thats what a 250k sounds like. If don't need the tone range above 6 or 7, put the 250 k in.

For that reason, I'd start with the 250k volume.

A JB with a 500k pot doesnt have enough power for me, let alone a 250 :bigthumb:

great 250K tip Artie! I say go with a Gibson 300K Volume and a 500K tone. I don't think you guys have tried this or believe me...thereare more pots out there than 250's and 500's!

Re: Which 250K pot with a JB?

Hmmm... I just read Lew's post about the JB+250K that actually has less treble than a CC... I just sold my CC because it doesn't have enough treble, so I guess I should try the JB as is first.

The CC + all mahagony LP guitar (dark) + YCV50 (dark) = way too dark, almost muddy with high gain and mushy bass.

I'm now suspecting that the JB with the regular 500k pot is the cure for that setup.

anyone know where to get linear taper 250k or 300k pots ?
