Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

NICE AMP!!!!! the 12th Fret is such a great store!!!! I have not been there in ages... i need to get my butt back into the city once in a while again....

If you want a Marshall cab to go with that i'd suggest a vintage style cab with greenbacks for sure....

On a good note Marshall has seriously slashed prices on new stuff in Canada... They dropped 30% on the retail prices...

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

You definately made the right choice :smokin:

The 1960A will work fine, but I don't like the sound of it with my 1959slp at all - those G12T-75 speakers are definately wrong for that amp. I have 2 1960's (one A one B) and for the cab I use with my Plexi, I replaced all the speakers with 2 70's G12M's and 2 G12M reissues.

Get a cab with G12M's in and you'll be in tonal heaven. Alternatively, you could try a cab with G12H30's.

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

Cool! Is that a 1987x?

I have a 1960a and a 1960b for my 1987x. If you like mids, I highly suggest a g12m and g12h X pattern in a 412. The g12h has more punch/low end and the g12m really brings out the dynamics of the upper mids.

For a fatter sound with less midrange, the standard g12t can do the job, but I don't think they have as much life as other British speakers out there.

Lots of people like the v30/g12h combo. The v30 is versatile but I like the g12 m and h more for Marshalls.

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

i do not like those celestion 75 watters for a vintage tone

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

Holy .... that's a nice amp, I think I had an orgasm looking at that thing!

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

A vintage Marshall cab with Greenbacks is the way to go. Greenbacks are awesome classic rock speakers, probably my favorite for most rock and roll applications.

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

Those amps are beautiful!

Greenbacks are the sound for sure, but if you play on '10' you'll blow them eventually - they really are 25W speakers, and your amp will do close to 200W wide-open.

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

Nice score! Very classy. Hey guys can you help him out on his specific ohms/watts question.

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

50watter or 100w ?

I tell ya' I've got a '74 Marshall 4x12 w/Greenbacks & it is smooth .......

If it's a vintage tone ya' want, save those pennies for the Vintage cab :bigthumb:

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

Hey guys can you help him out on his specific ohms/watts question.
I like to use 16 watt speakers for versatility. Wire 4 in parallel for 4 ohms, wire 2 in parallel for 8 ohms and wire 4 in series/parallel for 16 ohms.

Considering tone for 4, 8, or 16 ohms, I don't really notice a difference.

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

In general - will any cab work? Or does it have to be a specific ohmage or watts or something?

Your amp will have an ohms selector on the back so you can use 4, 8 or 16 ohm cabs with it - every Marshall (or Marshall style) 4x12 I've ever seen was either 4, 8 or 16. So any will work.

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

I think they sound best running at 16 ohms into a 4-12. I think it might be cool to have a custom cabinet builder make a vintage style 4-12 white Marshall clone. That amp is almost too loud for a 2-12. It'll just buckle the speakers, unless they're high wattage speakers. I'd go for Vin 30's or crisscross Vin 30/H30. Too bad you're not out here. There's a guy 3 miles from me who's willing to let go of a Bogner 4-12 Greenback cab for $575. If I didn't already have 2 Bogner cabs, I'd be all over it.

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

Aw, you SUCK, lol. I had one of those with the matching cabinet and the "History or Marshall" book personally signed by Jim Marshall. We were doing poorly for cash at the time and I had to sell it. If I knew about the Plexitone, if it was even out at the time, I may not have sold that amp. Would have sold the kid instead........JUST KIDDING (maybe).

The cab had the greenbacks and it was just heavenly. I wonder what the G12H30 + V30 mix would sound like?

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

Thanks for your help guys!
Yeah it makes sense. I think i'll be hunting for a greenback cab. Or any or the criss-cross configurations that you guys mentioned.

But still, If I can get a marshall 1960A with celestions for only 500, then I'll get it for now...

Right now I'm kinda stuck in the middle between a 15w blues junior and an 100W plexi monster lol... I think I'll be good with the plexi though.

Stevo I don't know what 1987x means... Its a vintage reissue. It has no effects loop. I think it has the same specs as a 60s plexi super lead amp.

I want a vintage tone so I will be looking for vintage 30s and greenbacks for sure. But i'll see what I can get my mitts on...

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

1987 = 50w Plexi
1959 = 100w Plexi

........are there 2 or 4 power tubes?

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

It's a 100. The 50s don't have the vent on the top of the cabinet.

keep in mind that Marshall has dropped their prices big time in Canada when wheeling and dealing for a used cab... a 1960a cab sells for $699 at my local Ontario store.... They used to cost $999 last month.

If you have to buy the used 1960 for cost issues i'd say go for it... but in the future i'd change for greenbacks or sell the cab for a Vintage reissue Marshall cab with Greenbacks... To be honest it is much cheaper to be a Marshall cab with Greenbacks in it then buying a used cab and changing speakers

That Head must of set you back a fair bit!!!! I saw it on there website a little while ago.. Nice score!

Re: Which 4x12 to get for Plexi Reissue head?

I AM SHOCKED NO ONE HAS MENTIONED G12H30s

Hands down THE best ROCK speaker for a bassy MARSHALL TONE. They get tighter as volume goes UP. Pure POWER, better handling, they DO NOT MUSH OUT LIKE GREEN's and they are the preferred speaker of EJ and Hendrix, who is said to have loved them along with JBLs.
