which 6L6's

Ok guys...it's come down to a choice of 3 different current production 6L6's for me to try out...

-TAD STR 6L6
-SED Winged C 6L6
-Sovtek 6L6WXT+

Please no other suggestions, I need to try some current production 6L6's and it's gonna be one of these 3.

Thanks guys!

What are you looking for tone-wise?

:smack: that would help! Im putting them in my Fender Twin...CLEAN is the game, something that would work well with the typical BF Fender tone...big bottom and clear/smooth highs.

Re: which 6L6's

Christian, I've got a set of both the Sovtek WXT+'s and the TAD long bottles. The Peavey came with the sovtek's and after a/b'ing them, I actually preferred the Sovtek's.....in this application anyway. The TAD's did sound very nice, but I actually lost more gain than I wanted as the longbottles are supposed to have quite a bit more headroom than the short bottles. I'll pm you with some more info.....

Re: which 6L6's

I like the Svetlanas the best. They have a full bottom end and the top compresses in a nice sweet way.

This is actually the first time in a long time that I don't own a 6L6 amp. I sold the Bassman LTD a couple months ago.

Re: which 6L6's

SEDs would be you best choice for a clean tone from your Twin. They will have the deepest bass and a smooth articulate top. I use them in my Bassman and my Tremoverb.

Re: which 6L6's

I'm in the market for some 6L6's myself for my HRD. (Same tone your looking for) I was looking into the long bottle TAD's or JJ's. Any reason JJ's didn't make your poll?
BTW, I finally have to break down and buy preamp tubes for the 1st time in my life.:laugh2: My endless supply of NOS tubes has dried up.:yell: When my Grandmother passed away in 91'.I found a shoe box full of NOS preamp tubes from my Grandfather. Amprex,Sylvania,Phillips and RCA's.:smokin:

I hear ya Ken! I bought a boat load of NOS tubes from a guy years ago for next to nothing nd they are all just about gone!:yell:

I need to try a good bit of currrent production tubes and see what is great and what's just good and what sucks. As for the JJ's I will br trying them out very soon but after doing a lot of reading the SED, Sovtek and the TAD are the 3 tubes that I want to pick between...no real reason to be honest. Lew's brother Bruce is building me an amp as we speak and unless I change my mind again it will have JJ power tubes (6L6's) in it so I'll get to try those as well pretty soon.

Re: which 6L6's

I'm always wondering if the TAD aren't just relabeled tubes of different brands?

Re: which 6L6's

Christian, I think Bruce put the Sovtek WXT's in my '51 Super. My buddy Rondo likes those NOS Phillips 6L6 WGB tubes in his '54 tweed Super. Lew

Yes they are. The ones in question are made in China for TAD to a specific design by TAD. You will notice on their website that the sell select "TAD" branded JJs EIs and Sovteks (EH), etc. I can't remember where I read it but I believe the design and engineering of the 6L6 STR and 6L6 WGC-STR was done in Germany and then manufactured in China.

Re: which 6L6's

I use the Sovtek WXT+'s in my Triamp, like them a lot. I wouldn't say they add so much clean headroom, I'd sooner think they add some BALLS. And volume, too! Even at low volumes you can notice the difference.
