I wish Mesa would consult with another great amp builder to refine the Rectifier. That amp is definitely a classic and sounds good, but if it were just a few notches better, it'd be a true beast. I wonder how many pro's have had theirs modded to be better? A bias pot would be good, as well as stripping them down to basics, and getting rid of all unnessesary circuitry. I can't wait to hear their new EL-34 Stilletto!

You and I have the same opinion of the Mesas ...

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

The guys from AC DC used JMP's. They're similar to a Plexi. Combine the channels to make a mean gain machine. They also have great cleans with single coil guitars. But with humbucker equiped guitars, the cleans are easily over driven and you obtain a nice bite of crunch.

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

Probably I have to say the plexi, although I like the JCM 800 a lot, and I liked the flexiblity ... in regard to the JMP MK II thing, I never had much experience one way or the other with those, but I totally understand the whole gray area stuff. There is something about the Plexi's dynamics that just work right clean or pushed.I'd like to pick both personally, the rectos are nice, but I don't like the way the eq is staged on those, and the cleans aren't really my thing. Other than a brief passing with an AC 30 RI, I couldn't say.

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

If money is an issue, I believe the Peavey Classic 50 4x10 is a fantastic 'classic' tube amp.

Used buy many a weekend warrior.

Both channels are superb, the gain channel is good for anything up to hard rock. It doesn't have that modern hi-gain sound, which is why I recently sold mine to purchase a 5150.

My strat has never forgiven me.

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

bassman

and the gain on them really varies

the ab165 has a sort of scooped midrange & another gain stage if thats your thing

but personally i like the tweed/aa864's more

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

and on most of them the controlls are just bass, treble, volume

though the 59's have mid & presence controlls aswell

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

yeah, that was an old post. I've had my bandmaster for 3 months now and tried out a few bassmans that the guy i bought from had.

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

I would say either a mesa (2 channel) recto or a jcm 800 with either a sd1 or zw44 infront.

I voted jcm800.

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

All of those amps are great. If forced to pick one, it'd be an arm-wrestle between the bassman and the plexi.

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

I am absolutely shocked that no-one has mentioned the Mesa Boogie Mark IV. To me, it's the absolute epitome of a workhorse amp that can get just about any tone that you can think of, and you can foot-switch to it. Three tones that you can switch to- clean, solo, and dirty rhythm. What a great amp.

Re: Which amp is the ultimate tone monster?

Sorry, a little more. This is an amp that has been produced since the early '80's and it's still going strong. How can you argue with that kind of longevity? I'm tellin' you, if you have the patience, just about any tone that you want to get is in a Mark IV. You may need to add a cabinet to perfectly nail what you want to hear, but it's within the capabilities of the amp.
