I'll second this one. Great, cheap mod to a decent pedal already.
I'll also mention the MI Audio Blue Boy (I've got the old one)...fantastic pedal.
But if I could only have one for everything, it would have to be a RAT!

I like several. It's hard to pick a favorite. Here are a few:

Pedals are just crazy. Changing guitars, amp--even the cords or the power supply really seems to change how I like a pedal.
And sometimes even a mediocre pedal can sound fantastic. I have a Peavey Accelerator Overdrive. Anybody remember these from the late-'80s? To be honest, I never cared very much for this pedal for a straight-guitar lead tone, BUT...for SLIDE WORK--HOLY Cow! New ballgame! It's just the right amount of raspiness and ratiness that makes for an outstanding slide tone.
So, keep in mind that sometimes you can find a use for a pawnshop prize--that your expensive boutique pedal might be not right for.

Stuff I like for a low-mid gain blues tone:
G2D classic (marshall plexi-esque)
G2D cream-tone (pre-blackface fender tone -great for a Robben Ford sound)
Crowther Hotcake (for AC30s)
Ibanez Sonic Distortion (for the SRV thing)
Vox Big Ben OD (ballpark to the sonic distortion)
DAM Red Rooster (for a treble booster tone)
Catalinbread Silver Kiss (for a very flexible mid gain tone)

Over the years I have only used a few OD pedals. My first one was a original Rat pedal. More Fuzz than OD, but it had some good tones. I then moved to a Boss Super Overdrive. A very underrated OD pedal. For $40 it is a very good OD. When I got my Marshall I bought an original Bluesbreaker Pedal, which I still use with my Marshall. With a Marshall this pedal works great, with other amps its only so so. It tends to take what Marshalls do and flavors it nice. Then I moved to a Tubescreamer. The TS9 RI is a very good OD, but if you want it to be great send it to John Spina (StratDeluxer97) and he will make it sound Awesome. I have a new one coming. Once I have had some time to play with it I will post a review.
Out of all the stock over the counter type of OD pedals I would say a TS9 is a very good OD pedal. With a few tweeks it can be tremendous!

I used to have close to a dozen dirt boxes--working in a music store will do that. Out of those, I kept three--Ibanez SD-9, Modded Real Tube, and Univox UniDrive. I bought a Behringer OD100 for casual stuff, it sounds better than you'd think a $20.00 pedal would.

I have a buddy who's works at the music store and who has some decent stuff, but he's pretty happy with that Behringer pedal. For my daily practice and some recording, I use and love the Behringer V-Amp2, Vampire 1X12, and Vampire head. For the money, I don't think anyone beats Behringer. And now they are coming-out with the new Bugera tube amps, I am very interested to try those. I have two Traynor tube amps (Custom Blue 50 and YCS-100) that I think are about the best deal in tube amps these days, but I'm waiting to see if the Bugera amps assume that role for me.
