Which delay pedal?

The DD-20 and the Carbon Copy are both great pedals! I have both on my board. I had a Line6 Echo Park for a while and I couldn't stand it. If you need to turn the delay level up to even half way (12 o' clock), it actually cuts out the original note you play and it only plays the delay. So you just hear ONLY the repeats. If you used the level down low it would work ok, but I need louder repeats for a lot of the music that I play. I hated that pedal....

You were doing it wrong

Re: Which delay pedal?

I thought you liked the CC? Dark, rich, and chewy- like a Milky Way bar.

I did like the CC for an analog delay but I just don't like most analog delays...that dark sound is not the greatest for my tone in general.

The Aqua Puss is much brighter and more articulate...more like a tape echo and for my rig which is mid heavy and crunchy most of the time anyway a brighter more clear delay works better.

Re: Which delay pedal?

I'd go TC Flashback. You get a tap tempo (in a way) and the Toneprint thing too. Sounds as analog or digital as you want. You might even find a used Line6 DL4 that cheap too- if you can, go with that.

Does the Aqua Puss sound good on a slapback setting? I love my CC for slapback, but I could stand with it being a little bit brighter.

You should try out the Diamond Memory Lane Jr. if you get the chance. Amazing, amazing delay.

Re: Which delay pedal?

Regardless of the fact we're all Duncan fans, the SD Deja Vu is the best Duncan pedal IMO, and ranks high up the list for delays. It's got features that the others don't, and a great sound. Tap Tempo, modulation, and a pan knob between an echoplex sound and digital delay sound, so you can strike a balance between those two sounds, or choose one or the other.

Out of all the Duncan pedals I've tried, the Deja Vu and Shape Shifter are my favorites.
They outclass a lot of other pedals. The Shape Shifter is like having a Fender tremolo circuit you've got full control over.

Try the EHX Memory Toy too.

Can't say it's better or worse than any of the others as I haven't tested them properly,
but it's on your price bracket and I love mine.
The stock modulation circuit is badly adjusted, but one screwdriver and 2 minutes of your time and it's great. :)

I love the Ibanez DE-7 and the Memory Toy is pretty bloody good too !

Not for me...I just can't dig on digital delay pedals.

No amount of companding or analog voicing can cover up the fact that I'm listening to a digital unit...

I'm not even a big fan of analog delay pedals...I like tape but from time to time I need a little echo and don't have room for an Echoplex so the AP does the job alright. I like the old big box DMM pedals too but to honest thats about it in terms of delay pedals I'd actually buy.

Re: Which delay pedal?

I loved the carbon copy. I like a subtle delay and so the warmth of the repeats was great, it let my chords and notes come through while the repeats just add a little depth, space, and flavor. The thing is that the carbon copy gets brighter with shorter delay time and so in that way I found it pretty versatile.

Re: Which delay pedal?

I think the sound on the Deja Vu is wonderful, although I had a few issues with it:
'Unity' - the point where delays have 100% feedback varied depending on where the 'digital/analog' knob was set, so long loops that slowly faded over many seconds were difficult to set if that knob isn't in exactly the same place as before. Yes, I realize I might be the only one who needs this in a delay pedal.

The other issue, which was the most annoying: Unless you are standing directly above the pedal, it is difficult to see if it is on or off. The weird lens on the LED reflected light in a strange way.

Re: Which delay pedal?

Of the 4 you mentioned, I have the Hardwire DL-8. I have owned the CC and later sold it. The CC is a good to great sounding pedal, but limited in what it can do. I became bored with it. The Hardwire sounds great, has the built in looper that is easy to use and the LoFi and Tape settings are not bad.

I also own a DejaVu and the Line6 Echo Park. Both are great pedals too. I tend to use the DejaVu along with the Hardwire the most. The DejaVu is very under rated and even the Hardwire DL-8 should get more attention than it does, but that's my opinion.
