Which Distortion/Overdrive Pedal Do I Need?

Which Distortion/Overdrive Pedal Do I Need for 80's metal crunch sound?
The closest I got was a Boss Hyper Metal, but that's still not it.

I will be installing a JB in the bridge position of my strat very soon and will be using that pickup for all my rhythms.
I'm basicly going for an early metallica crunch sound, and no I will not buy a Mesa/boogie or Marshall.

What I want to know is what distortion pedal will be the best for getting that great crunch with my JB in an Alder Strat with a maple fretboard.
(amp is a fender hot rod deluxe)
I have a boss sd-1 on the way, hopefully that will help me get something closer to what I'm searching for. Even if the best thing to do is buy a tube screamer and send it to John Spina, I will do it.

I also have a DS-1, I am currently using it just as a boost, but if sending that to Spina to get modded would do the trick, then I would be down for that.
What do you think?

I dont usually associate metallica with THE 80's metal sound,but i am also looking for a distortion pedal for 80's metal sound. I think i am going to try a V-Amp2 instead of a dist pedal. I like all of the sounds i have heard it produce

I'll be the first one to tell you how much I Love a DS1,but I don't think even the modded one will get you there? I Mean it reminds most of us of a JCM 800...MRID used to describe it as an 800 on steroids,but I'm not sure it's tight enough and if it's eq'd right? Maybe I'm wrong,but I'm a classic rock/blues guy and I think my mods bias towards those styles and not the metal players...

Ya, he is an idiot. His pedal is more of a boost i think. But i like that era of marshall amp tone.

Hmmm well I'll try a Wylde Overdrive and Maxon Overdrive this week. Once I get the JB installed it will be easier to find what I need.

For Metallica: I've had great results using a Metal Zone ***BUT didn't really get anything I was happy with for 'Fade to Black" Until I started experimenting with a really short delay at just the right mix level! Try a bit of delay and eq with whatever distortion you have.

As for YJM - don't forget, he uses a DOD 250 (Basically a low gain, high output Overdrive) into the front of a fairly stock old Marshall. It's the pedal/marshall combo that brings that tone.. And the man always plays at high volume. Tough to simulate with a little amp and fuzz box....

Au contraire! With the distortion level cranked on mine I use it for gritty Iron Maiden solos, usually Adrian Smith style solos, and also for just jamming. It will work for just about anything you want it to. As for a pedal, I don't know if that's really possible. That crunch comes from the DiMarzio Super Distortion and Marshall Stacks. Don't know how a hot rod would get that sound. I have 2 OD and 3 Distortion pedals. I use my Keeley DS-1 for rhythm in metal (it's incredibly thin in the high register, and with a JB that is NOT GOOD, as it is thin up top too), my Spina DS-1 for solos and gritty rhythm parts, my TS-808 for Phish/light overdrive and some boosting, and my ZW-44 as a boost for metal overdrive with my Marshall. The crunchiest sound I get is combining Adrian Smith's rhythm channel on my JMP-1 with a fully cranked ZW-44. There is surprisingly no feedback, my rig is well protected against that. It gets a killer tone man. So I guess basically what I'm saying is get a ZW-44 if you want to combine it with your amp's od, and get a Spina DS-1 if you want it in one stomp . The Spina is probably the way to go, since Fender OD isn't usually associated with Kirk Hammett. That will get you the best overall sound, but I'm not sure if you can actually get the tone you are looking for from a pedal.

Are you saying your DS1 does all this? How does mine compare with Robert's DS1?

well early metallica (kill em all) was james using an invader in a mahogany guitar with a pro co rat into a modded marshall...so why not at least try out the rat it may get you close to what you want and should do 80s metal also with no problem. either that or go for an all out metal monster and get a mesa v-twin...can't beat tubes!

if you get a chance check out the digitech df-7 distorion factory. i just go tone today and so far its pretty cool. it has 7 different distortion pedals in it
1 ts-9 tubescreamer
2. dod overdrive.preamp 250
3. boss ds-1
4. pro co rat
5. boss metal zone
6 digitech metal master
7 big muff
it has alot of controls to tweak so i'm sure you could find a sound you liked.

Try a Tonebone Hot British. I can get sounds ranging from Metallica to Jeff beck with this thing. And the Dunlop ZW-44 is a god bet to. I'm getting mine next week. :laugh2:

as far as i know the YJM overdrive is a modded DOD 250, might be worth trying to build your own man

I've heard good things about marshalls guv'nor II pedal, it might be able to get you into metal/heavy crunch sort of sounds . . .
