Which do you prefer, a Gibson Flying V or a Dean V guitar?

Re: Which do you prefer, a Gibson Flying V or a Dean V guitar?

I have a couple Epi '58 V's, the only Flying V design I want to own. Love the string-thru aspect and the headstock shape. It's the original and I haven't seen anything that's improved on it.

Hamer USA Vector Korina. Yummmm. 50s V styling. Shame you can't buy a new one these days.

Dean headstock are just awfull.
Every other V is plenty fine although i prefer the classic Gibson over others

Had a '69 Gibson V I bought when it was around 10 years old for $600 which was a ton of money for me. As nice a guitar as I have ever played it was the victim of a bad scenario that came down to me having to give the guitar away for something my brother stole. I have played a custom Dean Rik Emmet V was insanely nice , ebony board but the headstock weight and balance was not comfortable at all. I'm sure if I got to play it every day I would adjust . Still liked the Gibson better . Really happy with my Jackson RR5 FR , might be the mods and Tom Anderson pups.

I can't stand the Dean peg head!

Gibson for sure. Never been a fan of Deans, headstock being a huge factor.

Another person here against the headstock.

Hated that headstock for 25 years until I bought my first Dean in 2003. A Czech made Korina V. Paid $350 at the time. Now they are $600-$750. KORINA!! $350!!! Even $600-750 is a steal for a good Korina guitar.

What a guitar for the price and then after I played it an hour I realized the headstock did not make a difference at all.:13:

Now I have a few Dean Vs, all are great bang for the buck guitars, with some real nice stuff out there like the run of 50 limited edition Goldtop Vs with a custom set of USA Dean pickups made only for that set. Or the Cherry Sunburst V basses with a limited run of 25 on those. :27:

Best out there in my unsolicited opinion though is the Hamer Vector as mention above. My 2004 is "The BOMB" as them kids used to say.

Of course, your choice may vary! :headbang:

What is the hate for the Dean headstock? Is it aesthetics, or function, or both?

Re: Which do you prefer, a Gibson Flying V or a Dean V guitar?

Aesthetics as far as I can tell. You like it or you don't. I had my mind changed by exposure.

Re: Which do you prefer, a Gibson Flying V or a Dean V guitar?

Oh I LOVE it. I have wanted a Dean "Z" for a while. I am not a pointy guitar guy at all but if I had to pick one it'd be an old school Dean Z.

I used to see 'em in Guitar Player magazine when I was a kid in the 80s, with some hottie in a bikini holding them. Wanted one ever since.

Horribly ugly, way too big to be hanging out there on the thin neck, and the strings go off at all odd angles.

Gibson. Hamer would also be in the running. I am another hater of the Dean headstock. Also, the body shape is a little different and not to my liking.

Re: Which do you prefer, a Gibson Flying V or a Dean V guitar?

I'll be the first to say it: Dean.

Has the upper fret access of the Gibbo 58 style without the hard corners, is pg-less, and generally have fantastic neck profiles.

Dean lover here. The thinking on the headstock according to Dean Zelinsky was that like when you have your headstock resting on a wall when you play it, if the headstock has more mass it will be louder acoustically and have more sustain. Does it work? Questionable. I do tend to like the Dean neck profile over Gibson's though.
