Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

I love both but prefer humbukers, I love the warmer tone from Humbukers. I started off with singel coils and still love the sound of a Strat. I will allways have a Strat, fot that strat single coil sound. But at the end of It I preffer humbukers.

Hmmmmm..... someone's gonna say P90s, reckon those be single coils :scratchch

I agree. Humbuckers are "home". It's nice to have single coils for a little change up, though (now & then). P-90's are a breed unto themselves. I hadn't even thought of them, but Humbuckers are still my favorite.

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

Its a toss up for me really.....depending on what i wanna do. I will say that the people who like buckers better are saying that they like the warmth of em, but the neck pickup on a Strat is pretty warm if you ask me!!!!!!!

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

Big sounding singles.

P-90's, Phat Cats, Rio Grandes, Tele lead pickups.

I love my humbuckers, but I can take a single coil loaded guitar (like my Sheraton with PC's) and cover ANY style of music with it and do it all well. :burnout:

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

Sorry to spoil the question, but I can't choose. I's gots to have both!

Actually, I'm on a quest right now to figure out what is the best all-time HSS combination, so I can stay with my indecisive nature! I'm using C-5/2 Surfers but am going to split hairs even further, till I come up with something that balances better.
I may be leaning toward the 59B and 2 Fralin Steel Pole 43's.

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

Humbuckers in the bridge, singles in the neck. Singles in the bridge position tend to sound icepicky and humbuckers in the neck tend to sound muddy (esp. with distortion) to me.
I've never tried P90's, tho. Maybe those could work in both positions?

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

Single coil on the middle and humbucker-sized P-90's on the neck and bridge. I hope Seymour would release humbucker-sized P-90 versions of his best selling pick-ups like the Jazz and '59.

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

Sign me up for single coils. I just love the Strat and p90 sound. You can so many usable sounds with the volume and tone controls. To me a humbucking guitar only sounds great with everything on 10.

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

I like both, but I could live without single coils...

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

For Me... A APS-II in the neck of a Strat is the meaning of life. :laugh2:
I Luv Bucker's. But my playing is melodic and vocal influnanced. Single coils
have a very vocal Quality to them.

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

singles are god!! i have a tele with 2 singles in the bridge a quarter punder and a 54 that are contolled with a 3 way with the middle being series, a dimarzio hot bridge pickup from a strat in the neck and a hot rails in the middle . i have to say it is the most versitile guitar ever. i only got the hot rails for that scooped metal tone. the bridge works for evrything and the neck is really bluesy. they both have their up and downs but their is nothing likes singles in series or with dummy coils none of the noise but all the clarity.

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

Humbuckers. They're really all I use. They work best for the heavy rock I play. I do like single coils though. I've always wanted a strat or telecaster or even something with P-90s to mess with, and will probably buy one of those eventually.

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

After 35 years of various humbucker loaded guitars, I picked up a nashville telecaster last year and have decided I have missed out on some pretty good tone for a long time. Of course, for years I played in various rock/metal bands and I'm doing more rockin' country type stuff now. A tele doesn't really work on Ozzy covers.

I'm looking into getting a p-90 loaded Les Paul Special to try and get a nice fat single coil tone. For years I kind of thought of P-90s as some sort of cheap undesirable cast off. Little did I know that one of my favorite songs of all time, "Mississippi Queen" was rendered with just such "cheap castoffs". That song had such an effect on me when I was young that I crashed my folks' car. I just have to be careful when I hear that tune.

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

I think once I started playing single-equipped guitars I started to fully find my own voice on the instrument.

I've been trying to get used to Humbuckers but I don't see any advantage in them for me, perhaps with a lot of effects or much distortion but I always felt good about my sound with a lot of effects but my level of distortion is a lot of guy's clean sound. I guess my preference for fuzz tones for my "over the top" distorted sound might reflect my use of singles over buckers.

I'm only 40 and still have a lot to learn though. An earlier post mentioned that singles coils are like an effect for him, and I know what he means and I agree. The "best" bucker I have is a DiMarzio Fred and that is very much like an effect for me. I think all pickups that have personality and character are in a sense like an effect in that their sound is a big part of what your doing so you have to play the part they fit.

Re: Which do you prefer - single coils or humbuckers?

I would have to say buckers. But I like them both for diffent applications. Too bad the JB Jr. doesn't fit into a strat without pickguard mods. That would be interesting to hear.

My thoughts also.
