Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

The Full Shred is A5, that's not close, and it has heavier coils.

There is no direct equivalent in Seymour Duncan's product line

The Super Distortion is a medium-wind like the Duncan Custom and probably awg43.

But the Duncan Custom has a single normal size ceramic magnet.

The Super Distortion has a large and two smaller ceramics, which is what only the Invader has in the SD world. The SD distortion has only the large ceramic magnet. And both Invader and DD have heavier coils than SD and Duncan Custom.

And of course the SD has hex poles.

So in SD you'd need the bobbins from the Full Shred, the coils from the Duncan Custom and the magnets from the Invader.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Everything you say is right, except that the SuperD only has one ceramic mag, no smaller ones at the sides.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Oh. Might have mixed it up with the 500T which has the triple magnets.

So many variables to shred some more :)

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

not to sound mean or anything. but if you're looking for the Super Distortion sound.....why don't you just buy a super distortion? Just sayin'.

I would agree, The Super D has it's own sound and it is a good one.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

The only one that comes to my mind, on paper anyway, is the recent forum creation, the Crazy 8. It's got the medium wind and big full sound from the powerful magnet. However, it's alnico 8 and not ceramic like the SuperD.

The SuperD is a classic and anybody trying to chase it's sound in another pickup is just wasting time. If you want what that pickup gives, get it.

BTW, I have one for sale.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

The Crazy 8 is the closest thing. It had a Super D thing going on but, IMO it was a bit better in some ways.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Thanks everyone.

Here is the deal. The Hardtail Standard comes with knock offs of the Super D and I like the basic sound of the Hardtail Standard but I can also tell the pickups are kinda cheap. So I was going to replace them and the guys at Dean suggested those.

I'm open to other choices but I don't know anything really about pups. I would like the guitar to get tones from close to a Les Paul playing hard rock and metal to the split coil sound it gets now. It's a mahogany body guitar so I should be able to get close.

Any suggestions?

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

you can play hard rock and metal with 59s or Seth Lovers or Phat Cats if you want.

But yeah, i guess it bares repeating; get a Super Distortion if you want a Super Distortion. You PROBABLY won't be banned from the forum...

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

If you want the Super Distortion go get a Super Distortion. It should be that simple...
If you want the coil splitting I believe their "Dual Sound" is that with the split option.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

The Super Distortion also does coil splitting, and very well I might add.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Actually I think you need the DP-101 or whatever they call the splittable version.

The SD is cheaper than the Duncans, too, so I don't see a problem unless you have a problem with their business tactics errr methods and the fact that some creme in their zebras is greenish (WTF?).

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

I like to be loyal to Seymour, after all I use his band width! :)

The Duncan Distortion is the "same kind" of pickup, but more refined, in lack of a better word. Why don't you try that one? If it's FAIL you can slam in ab A5 magnet to get a JB or A2 to get a really cool pickup (that has nothing to do with the Super Distortion).

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

I have a SuperD and A Duncan Distortion. Not even vaguely the same creature.

I use the superD for classic rock, hard rock up to heavy metal (maiden etc) I use the distortion for hard rock, heavy metal and beyond (dokken, metallica etc..)

The SuperD has been around this long because it is simply a great pickup. everyone should have one. You should have more Duncans, but you need a superD too.
